Ex FAANG. Started www.beaver.digital (although these are really out of date now, last one was finished in 2016). Interested in the area where design and code intersect. More info at www.nikkwong.com. I'm a one man shop for creating attractive design oriented solutions to hard digital problems. Interested in small teams where I can work on technologies and skills beyond my current expertise.

Also had a Kickstarter project that I’ve turned into a business I’ve been running for 8 years now. I’m really interested in a founding role or at least a role where I have ownership and a lot of autonomy with interesting things to work on. I'm not so interested in being a staff software engineer unless the project is really cool--like working in the sciences, or for some social good, or something else cutting edge. Thanks for reading!

Hi there! I'm a self-taught programmer, I've been programming using the above technologies for over 7 years (though I'm primarily a C#/.NET developer).

I've developed various projects/tools over the past few years that are useful for me but I think others would find interest in as well, some of the projects I've built/worked on include:

- EditorEX, a mod for the hit VR game "Beat Saber" that enhances the newly added official 3D beatmap editor and adds some well-desired features.

- Reality, a Unreal Engine mod loader written in C# that works by hosting CLR and uses native delegates, etc.

- osu.Launcher, a program which runtime patches the rhythm game called "osu!" to let it run on unofficial servers.

You can check out all of these projects over on my GitHub, feel free to reach out over email if you're interested! :)

Résumé/CV: https://www.dropbox.com/s/iq7nkcfqjkinu2p/Iris%20Chase%20Res...

Email: iris (at)) ....... enesda puncutation com (good luck scraping that ;)

Self-taught, I've spent years trying to bootstrap software companies but I've exhausted my ramen money if you catch my drift.

My crowning project is called IVD (github.com/irischase/IVD) which is a GUI programming language and implementation; it's also: A bad way to try to make money from scratch. I really leveled up a ton in all aspects as an engineer from the project, but it's unfinished and in hiatus because after spending 3+ years on it I realized how much time doing anything interesting takes (especially alone) and that I need to pick my battles more wisely. I still want to get back to it someday though, but for now I'm seeking employment to get my ducks in a row. Other highlights are in my resume.

I'm fine with web tech, it just wasn't appropriate for the projects I got most of my experience on. Primarily interested in backend but projects that are front-end heavy also appeal to me. Feel free to reach out if you think I could be useful! :)

Contract or part-time

Location: Africa

Remote: yes

Willing to relocate: yes, to any location in Africa, where i can get the necessary permission to live and work.

Technologies: Linux, Fullstack, System Administration.

Résumé/CV: on request (software development, CTO, mentoring, training, fluent in English and German)

Like a recent Ask HN: Recommend employers with positive social impact I am looking for similar work. I am a European software developer who has lived and worked on four continents. Now it's time to move on and so i am looking to relocate to Africa.

While i could find a job elsewhere i believe that the experience living in an area where my work is going to have an impact gives me a better understanding of the needs of the location i am serving. Whether it is through direct contact with clients and users or just by being part of a local community and learning about the reality of living there.

I have more than a decade of experience running a company, doing software development, support and training and mentoring adults and students, as well as working on educational projects, and i am willing to take on a mixture of roles as needed to support a project.

I'm at a transitionary period of my life, and I'm looking for a more purpose-driven role. I'm looking for a company that is solving hard problems that need to be solved. I'm not the one that necessarily wants to solve these hard problems, but I want to support the real problem solvers of our day and age. What kind of problems need to be solved? The following:

- Unifying quantum mechanics with general relativity

- World: poverty, hunger, peace

- Climate change

- Plastic pollution

- Advancing medicine

You might get the gist, maybe you can come up with a few that I haven't mentioned :-) I'm looking for a place where I can support the people that are able to solve them or solve part of it. For example, if Tesla would want to hire me then I'd work there (climate change). If Brilliant.org would hire me to make their physics education better, I'd work there (higher probability for unifying QM with GM). If some prosthetics lab would hire me to advance prosthetics, I'd work there. Hell, I'd even work for a trading/HFT firm as long as I know that 5% of the profits go to one of these goals. I'd even work for an oil firm, as long as I can help them create a business that allows to transition one away from it.

Questions for your team (Choose one or more):

1. How many possible 128x128 1 bit color bitmaps exist? Follow up: How can you traverse this state space to generate output meaningful to a human?

2. Which letters can you remove from the English language where it's still readable without ambiguity? Follow up question(s): What's the smallest representation of the English language where it's still readable without ambiguity?

3. In what case(s) is a loop required to be unbounded (in any programming language)?

4. How many programs can be implemented in 10,000 bytes or less? Follow up: How many programs can be implemented in exactly 1000 bytes, 2000 bytes, ..., 10,000 bytes?

If interested, ask me how these questions map onto practical real world problems and/or submit answers so we can have a discussion.

Hey all - I’m a former healthcare VC that’s working through a CS master’s degree at Penn with the ultimate goal of jumping into an engineering or product role. As a VC at Echo Health Ventures (http://www.echohealthventures.com) I invested in healthcare delivery businesses like Dispatch Health, Genome Medical, Heartbeat Health, and TytoCare. I helped these businesses find product/market fit, scale operations into new markets and channels, and optimize their financial planning / fundraising. Prior to Echo I was a healthcare investment banker at J.P. Morgan.

My master’s program has a flexible schedule so I’m primarily looking for an internship or “working student” role where I can start contributing to a product in a professional context. Feel free to reach out if you have a role that could be a good fit for a highly motivated graduate student with substantial real-world experience (including fairly deep healthcare domain knowledge) and a growing tech skill set.

I’m also available to serve as a formal or informal advisor to venture-backed businesses. As an ex-VC, I have lots of insight into fundraising, business planning, and product development (especially in the healthcare space). I’d love to help de-mystify VC for early startups and/or work with established teams to help optimize capital formation or product development. For this type of engagement, I’d prefer to work with folks who are local to Seattle, but I’m open to a remote arrangement as well. Reach out and we can grab a coffee or set up a zoom meeting to get introduced.

I’ve had a few good conversations with folks from last month’s thread - I look forward to chatting with you!

A little different than the regular hacker news post here but figured I'd give it a shot. I'm a recent film grad with a lot of practical experience including editing, 2D animation, writing, directing, etc. I'm open to full-time or project-based work.

I am a bioinformatician with six years of experience in academic settings - areas I previously worked in include genome assembly and annotation, RNASeq analysis, and metagenomics. Sort-of relatedly, in the last few years I got increasingly big on gardening and subsistence agriculture - apart from doing a lot of work in the neighbourhood I live in, I am taking a permaculture design course, and I'm studying up on the areas of biology that I didn't pick up through my career in life sciences.

I am mostly looking for short-term work, and for unique opportunities. I take projects in the areas of data science, big data engineering, and machine learning, as well as in development of scientific software. If you have a permanent job that I might find really worth doing, or a startup idea that you think might resonate with me, please let me know!

I am currently the Network Administrator for a small south Texas restaurant chain. The duties of my position encompass more than just network related tasks though. I help provide direct user support, am the primary admin that monitors and responds to security related events, handle lower tier support(non-networking) escalations, maintain PCI compliance evidence.

I have an Associate's degree in Computer Science and took Cisco Networking and Routing classes. This lead to me attaining Network+ and Security+ certification, which are currently active. I am always looking to learn or do something that I haven't done before with tech, both in and out of work. I have a small homelab that I try to experiment with when I'm learning new topics and techniques. I've always had a strong troubleshooting mindset.

I'm looking for a Network Administrator position or something similar. I am interested in branching, Sysadmin etc. My main things is that I'm not afraid of learning new things and am always willing to learn.

Hi HN, I've been working on Data Science problems exclusively for the past 5 years, and gained a lot of supporting knowledge related to ML infrastructure during this time.

I'm most proficient in GIS and financial time-series datasets, like locations of shipping vessels/flight tracking/road traffic tracking as I've spent the most time with trading houses correlating paper contract prices to the movement of these physical assets.

I've got 7-8 years of experience with Python in general, and I'm really proficient with PostgreSQL (for any back-end task) and establishing pipelines for Machine Learning (ML) tasks (using Prefect for the past year or so).

I also work on data science problems exclusively, without the adjoining back-end problems (e.g just give me the data set and you'll get back a model).

Over the past 3 years, I've also become quite proficient in Golang and if you have some projects in Golang, I'd like to work on them as well.

I'm a software dev with math/physics background, primarily focused on machine learning and data science/engineering. I can operate some other tools that fit the broader "MLOps" job description too, like Docker/Kubernetes, and some ML-related products of GCP and AWS. I did some webdev work in training visualizations for ML algorithms and for my personal website.

My main topics of study were statistics, ML, and analysis; I am fit in theoretical ML/DL concepts and numerical programming, allowing me to develop and implement performant algorithms.

On the side, I have been contributing to a couple of OSS projects, e.g. Google Benchmark and JAX. My latest project is pybm, a Python CLI for reproducibly benchmarking code throughout a git history. You can find it along with several other smaller projects in my github profile at https://github.com/nicholasjng.

I'm a full stack developer with an emphasis on front end development – particularly focusing on performance, usability, and general user experience. I love making things look and feel great for users, and ensuring a degree of reliability and correctness that front ends deserve. I also enjoy building great APIs for other developers, making it so it's easier and more fluid to build great front ends with less expertise or experience.

My most recent work is an overhaul of https://instantdomainsearch.com and the leading the creation of the front end of https://instantdomains.com. Prior to that I've helped build a wide range of products from website builders to a robotic arm simulation environment for chemistry experiment automation. I love to explore, learn, and get better at my craft.

My goal is to join a team building great things for customers we really care about. I want to learn, teach, and share my experience. I'm motivated to deliver the best work I can, support a team I love working with, and build products I can take pride in. I'm looking for full time work, ideally.

I'm a full stack software engineer looking for new opportunities. My latest work involved developing Sentinel, an open source, self-hosted, platform as a service with built in support for canary deployments. I'm proud of leading the design of Sentinel's core architecture which was designed to be deployed in any cloud provider. This involved automating the provisioning of compute instances and their configuration details with Terraform and Ansible. I also played a significant role in other parts of the Sentinel platform including:

- the implementation Docker Swarm Mode for managing applications deployed on the platform

- designing a RESTful API

- developing a command line interface written in TypeScript.

I'm redirecting my career path from industrial maintenance management to software development.

I've done, among other things, over 10 years of code maintenance and functions extensions in a live industrial production environments.

My current preferred tool set: Python, PostgreSQL, Django, Git, Docker, Linux. Now I prefer boring tools which allow me to concentrate on the problem at hand.

I'm open to other tools as needed.

My most recent project is Polish law change monitoring service available at https://unkot.pl. The source code https://gitlab.com/stakent/unkot

In the past I've used go (golang), cython, neural networks with feedback loops running on CPUs, genetic programming.

I've designed and implemented event driven architecture with log based source of truth for the system which is distributed, eventually consistent, can work with unreliable network.

Hi, HN.

I'm an intermediate level developer that's been programming for seven years, two of which professionally. I pride myself in my back-end work, but have experience with a wide variety of software development topics and technologies.

My most recent project is Decent, a censorship-resistant chatroom application that utilizes the Nano cryptocurrency network to allow for immutable communications to take place without the use of a central server. By using a block lattice network, users can send long messages to one another at relatively quick speeds for millionths of a dollar's value on a network which is near impossible for bad actors to block access to or modify.

If you're a startup or small company doing interesting work in need of out-of-the-box thinking and problem solving skills, I'd love to talk.

Hey! I'm a dev/manager with 10 years of experience. Most recently I was a manager at Oracle and before that a manager at an early stage startup. I quit Oracle year ago and I've been building open source data devtools on my own (github.com/multiprocessio). I've attracted and managed a number of open-source contributors here.

The major project, DataStation, I started last June and now has 1.9k stars, 3000+ downloads, ~500 users per month (and growing), and around 40 pretty active users per month (and growing). It was on the front of HN for a bit yesterday as a Show HN. An offshoot CLI, dsq, has 1.9k stars and somewhere around 2000 downloads.

Separately, I write a lot about implementing and evaluating databases, compilers, emulators and so on at notes.eatonphil.com.

A number of my personal and Multiprocess blog posts have been on the front of HN, 9 this year to date. 10 in total last year.

I'm considering heading back to full time employment at a late stage startup or public company. I'm not yet sure if I'd like to go back as a manager or IC. Both have their appeals. I'd most like going to a dev tools, database, or software/internet infrastructure company.

I'm also open to contract work or part-time work at smaller companies. And definitely interested in anything along the lines of compilers or databases.

Thanks for reading my tome and checking out my projects and writing!

Hi, I'm a senior machine learning engineer at an applied AI company / AI consultancy for the last 2.5 years. Been working on projects across industries (healthcare, government, online retail, consumer business), and a big handful of different technologies to deliver impactful machine learning systems. I've also co-created and delivered internal training courses for more junior engineers and data scientists around API development and MLOps topics. Been doing hiring, and engineering management across our MLE team. Before this I was a physics post-doc, a fleet operations engineer of an IoT startup, helped found a hackerspace in Taiwan, run an Ignite speaker series, and dipped my feet into the entrepreneur world by taking on the StartupBus.

SEEKING WORK - Contract, Remote, based in NYC area, backend engineering

We're a team of (currently five) backend engineers having built and maintained highly available systems for several companies over the last five years, in addition to over 70 combined years of software development experience. Further scale is easily obtainable if your project is larger.

From infrastructure-as-code to site reliability to greenfield to renovation, we span the entire space of backend problem solving. We will take on your difficult, grungy problem and crush it. Your goals are our priorities.

Concrete examples:

* Realtime stats processing in a redpanda+golang stream architecture for one of the top 3 major US sports leagues - raw data through ML models to the screen!

* AWS Lambda architecture replatforming core portfolio management for a startup (>$1BN AUM) hedge fund

* Realtime stream processing of crypto exchange trade data through Kafka/data lake for an analytics platform. Met 5000ms SLA, blue/green deployment, arbitrarily many symbols/exchanges. Proof of SLA in extensive Cloudwatch metrics.

* built a framework to collapse dozens of singleton ETL programs into one config-driven, simple C# application performing the same functionality at ~80% reduction in maintenance cost year over year.

* built and managed a team of 8 engineers operating against multiple streams of work to meet business needs, with ~12 active projects at a time.

Ideal roles: firmware/low-level, high-traffic, large-scale backend service work (working w/large data sets that need bespoke engineering), "impossible" technical challenges, writing fake code that actually works for Hollywood movies and shows

I've done everything up and down the stack from low-level assembly up to massive web-scale work. Most recently I was a director of engineering at FullStory, focused on a mobile analytics product that I built from zero, wrote patents for, and hired up a team to take over. I'm looking more at low-level work right now at a small company with good culture.

I'm also happy to discuss any other interesting opportunities, especially if they come with difficult and interesting problems.

I'm a fast learner, effective mentor and communicator, and love technical challenges. Reach out for a more detailed history.

The contact form is back up. The node express REST API that this contact form endpoint was a part of turned out to be riddled with vulnerable and abandoned NPM dependencies. I decided to call it a loss and rewrote the thing in Rust, using Rocket.

My interests and passion lay mainly in backend development, but I'm always willing to give a hand to the frontend team when it's needed.

I have almost 9 years of experience in the fintech sector. My favorite projects are the ones where I had the opportunity to build the systems from scratch. My top 3 are:

1. In my beginning years, part of the team in charge of reengineering an entire web banking platform for the Paraguay branch of the largest bank by market share in South America. During these 3 years, I mastered C# by translating Oracle stored procedures into REST and SOAP APIs, and later integrating these services into the web frontend project. I also came up with a quite clever idea (and implementation) of reusing PL/SQL stored procedures through HTTP wrappers that ended up being very helpful to significantly reduce development time for parts of it.

2. Led a team of mobile and backend developers to launch the first app of one of the top banks in the country, allowing users to perform operations such as account, investment and other products inquiries, credit card and service payments, wire transfers and hiring new services.

3. Led the Instant Payments Systems project. 10 finantial institutions implemented our product to integrate their core to the Central Bank system for 24/7 payments.

I'm passionate about writing clean and maintainable code, and I'm always interested in learning new techonologies.

Also, got a full scholarship for a Master's degree in Data Science. Got my degree from a US uni and lived in Virginia for two years while completing the program.

Hey all, good morning here from the East Coast. I am a 11 year plus full stack software engineer looking for new opportunities. I invite all to check out my small blog and my GitHub as I am rather proud of all my documentation there. Some things notable about myself I was basically a founding engineer with Signal Foundation and myself came up with the name change "TextSecure" to "Signal". Also as far as I am aware I had the first OSS implementation of a limit order book online and my SDR project radiowitness is IMO pretty cool.

Resume: Provided upon e-mail request

I've got a little over 9 years of SWE experience. I'm looking for exciting back-end roles with either computer vision or AI/ML responsibilities. I've used Python for years and I'm very efficient with it but I'd also like to explore roles that work with Rust. I have lots of data-heavy application development experience and lots of experience creating web app products. I prefer to avoid subjective "technical interviews" where the exact criteria needed are not crystal clear at the beginning or where the interviewer wants to watch me complete the task while I'm on camera because that feels super weird to me.

Hey there! Wanted to reach out via email, but didn't see one posted. Striveworks is an AI/MLOps company and we're hiring a lot of positions right now, with some remote options to: https://boards.greenhouse.io/striveworks/

Any interest in working with CV & AI/ML for a U.S. government contractor? I'm a fellow SWE within NG and can help recommend some open positions we have, if you're interested. A quick search on our internal job board just now shows we have open recs in NC currently (since you're not willing to relocate).

I've worked on 100s of successful projects for Rockwell, Northrop Grumman, Adobe, Motorola, the DTIC, UK-NCIS, and many others. I was the sole software developer one year for 50% of the U.S. Vote and did the initial draft of one of Adobe's printer protocols. I've worked on my own Linux distro for 25 years and have patched and built 1,000s of FOSS packages in the process.

In my most recent role, discussed in the PDF, I had a patch to Linux kernel 5.17 accepted. It was a minor patch but made it possible for the project to support vanilla kernels.

I'm looking for 1099 work. I don't mind junior roles and/or "fill in the gaps" tasks.

Senior full-stack dev (lean more towards devops->backend than backend->frontend, but I can still sling some React components together and reduce your JS payload size). Lately I've been loving Stimulus Reflex and playing with a lot of micropython/ESP32/IoT stuff.

I excel at figuring out how to solve problems at all levels of abstraction (including what level of abstraction you should use), getting a solution in place, and then figuring out the feedback loops to iterate on that solution. I'm the senior engineer that knows that most coding is coming to an understanding of what problem you are trying to solve. Sometimes the most impactful code is the code you don't write.

Trying to change the world, still parsing the source code. I've been programming on the web since 1995, had a first career as a social worker and policy statistician, and have worked full-time as a programmer for almost a decade now.

Especially enjoy API and system design, integrating with crappy systems, user research, and really weird bugs. Make a decent PM in a pinch, but would prefer you have great PMs.

Will give you more looks if you can tell me why what you are doing makes the world better, but you've got to really believe it in your heart.

I have been working as a high school English teacher since 2012. Without a doubt, large parts of this job reinforce and feed my core values. I am acutely aware that my job, and the relationships that I foster, matter in a meaningful way, but it is time for me to retire from the classroom.

I intend to focus my career reboot toward Product Management, but I would be open to discussing alternative roles.

I am adept at building effective, productive relationships across interests and cultures, understanding stakeholder concerns and coordinating strategic objective completion around individualized solutions. I am calm in a storm and comfortable leading in a team with respectful, direct communication.

Software engineer with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and over ten years of experience in several technologies and programming languages. There are two fields where I mainly act: (1) DevOps; from database administration and data modelling to back-end programming or front-end design all the way to orchestrated deployment with latest tech and (2) Standalone software; involves embedded development in restrict environments, blockchain applications mostly related to Parity's Substrate and plain command-line interfaces.

On the open-source side of things, I regularly contribute to several projects, helping and communicating with other developers. Take a look at the available coding portfolio in my GitHub profile at https://github.com/c410-f3r where most public collaborations in the last five years were more focused on the Rust Programming Language ecosystem.

Over 40 certified courses have been completed and nine professional certifications that covers a wide range of areas were obtained from different organizations, e.g., Linux Foundation and the Blockchain Training Alliance. Learning is very important to keep up with both old and new technologies, my newest certification is the Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect and more certifications will be earned over time.

In my last work experience I refactored, architected and developed many key parts of a Parachain always aiming for security, readability, robustness and maintainability, which contributed to two successful marketing campaigns. In addition to all this and to finish, I also created and deployed a brand new Relay Chain like Kusama or Polkadot for custom usage and testing.

I'm a statistician I guess, but I get bored so I know a lot of other things, like how to build measurement systems, ask dumb questions, formulate hypotheses, design experiments, implement boutique models and build software with lots of higher order functions, fancy sums, optimization routines and interactive graphics that makes it all seem coherent and obvious... except that it isn't and I will have to spend the next month writing unit tests for surprising cases which somehow always pop up in practice. Anyway, I like hearing about neat problems, so if you have one please reach out.

Desired position: Senior Developer/Engineering Manager/Software Architect
I have been employed in software development for almost 10 years and have written code for significantly longer. I am a deep specialist in databases and a good generalist in most other areas. I built myself as a T-shaped developer. I have worked databases, back-end, front-end (web and native, mobile and desktop) and testing throughout my time. With databases, I have experience with everything from relational algebra theory (I studied C.J. Date) to database design and normalization to query, procedure and index optimization. Throughout my career, I have developed a systemic viewpoint and an ability to understand how different components of a project and different teams interact together, all in order to walk the path of technical leadership. As a true engineer, I understand the importance of measuring before changing. Also, I am a sociable person and I have a teaching degree and have taught on numerous occasions with excellent results. Currently I am learning Solidity.

Due to my experience, I am currently aiming for a software architect/engineering manager/team lead role, or a role with growth opportunities toward a similar tech leadership position, a position in which I can grow and polish the skills of colleagues. From a tech stack POV, I am most excited by opportunities to work in Rust and opportunities to work on free open-source software. If you are looking to make the world a better place and need an engineer contact me.

Hey, there! I enjoyed reading about your background! I know you said you'd prefer a late-stage startup or public company, but I'm wondering if you'd consider an earlier-stage start-up that is mission-driven?

I ask because Nava Benefits has an open role for an Engineering Manager that I think may be interesting to you. We also have various IC roles open. I'd love to connect with you if there is interest!

What the hell even is TCL? It's all over your profile.

We detached this subthread from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31583039.

This is the second time I had to do this to one of your posts in this thread. Please don't post like this to hiring threads in the future. Also, can you please stop posting unsubstantive comments generally? You've done that quite a bit and we're hoping for a somewhat different sort of forum.

TCL happens to be my first language. It is a command-based scripting language. Think Lisp, but where most things are also strings. Kinda hacky, but allows for very flexible syntax.

https://learnxinyminutes.com/docs/tcl/

This doesn't sound at all like a marketable skill :/

I don't imagine that there are many Tcl jobs listed.

The posting said that Joe is a Tcl/Tk maintainer; presumably why he puts this on his CV is not because of Tcl's current market share, but because being a maintainer for a historically widespread language reveals a skill set.

If you ever thought of embedding Lua into something, Tcl isn't a bad alternative.

Sort of like Cobol or MUMPS. There are systems which adopted Tcl for some reason 20 years ago and now the whole business depends on it and they will pay whatever it takes to keep it running.

It's a scripting language popular on Unix servers & workstations in the 90s. TK is a rapid gui kit.

Basically for everything you'd use a quick web based control panel for now, you'd connect to the server and start a tcl/tk script. It'd open up a gui you could control with X Windows.

There's probably still a lot of code out there.

> In my most recent role, discussed in the PDF, I had a patch to Linux kernel 5.17 accepted. It was a minor patch but made it possible for the project to support vanilla kernels.

I, too, fix typos in open source readme's.

I get (because you said so below) that you were just joking, but even if you didn't mean to cast aspersion, it sort of still takes that form. Better not to do that on someone's job posting.

It was a minor patch, as noted, but it was not a typo fix in a readme as you suggest. See https://lore.kernel.org/all/198c0ae2-efdf-7f47-11c7-27e9a87b... for additional details.

I was just joking.
