But if we can image it, then there IS an effect.

The photons emitted by that galaxy effect us, here in ours because we can see them.

It's the ones we can't see that are disconnected.

used to have an effect. They may no longer.

If you could capture that photon with a photovoltaic to trip a switch that kicks off a Rube Goldberg machine—isn’t that an effect?

Yes, that's an effect, just like capturing the photon and using it to build up an image is an effect. You're thinking along the wrong axis, though. The issue isn't "effect" vs "no effect". The issue is "then" vs "now".

The light that we see today left them 10 billion years ago. Any light that leaves them now[1] will never reach us. And any light emitted by us now will never reach them.

[1] Yes, I know, "now" is not really a useful concept when dealing with large velocities in Special Relativity. I don't think my overall point is destroyed by that, though. If you can find a more rigorous way to state what I am trying to say, please do.

I think "now" is an underrated concept in physics, as in a universal ordering of events, regardless of what order position and relative velocity cause them to be observed. If there is indeed a universal "now", then faster-than-light travel need not lead to time travel.

This is possibly true.

I'm in my 50's now, and when I was in my 40's, my life-situation allowed me to pursue a lot more outside interests and hobbies. I had a lot of different outside activities, and would go out after work 4 nights a week with something different.

A mass-layoff 5 years ago changed my circumstances in a lot of ways. I have another job - one that I love probably much more. But I relocated, and where I live now just doesn't have many of the same opportunities to do all the different things I used to do. And it's causing a lot of feelings of emptiness and burnout.

Since I work remote, I'm planning on another relocation.

What was the main difference between the two locations?

Are these major cities or more rural?

I am thinking of a relocation to a less city-like environment but worry about the loneliness factor. The cities offer people, but less hobbies I'm interested in. City hobbies are mostly social and drinking oriented.

As someone who has split time across rural/urban life, going rural to get away from drinking oriented socializing is probably not going to work as well as you think it will.

How so?

Thats the best thing about authority figures, they are believed until they can be proven otherwise, I'm not in a position to prove otherwise. I often wonder if autism is being used as a cover for child abuse!

Innuendo amongst other things is the perfect trigger for paranoia, and in such situations, people will get banged up in a mental health hospital and have drugs forced down their throat otherwise they just get labelled as uncooperative, and then other drugs will be forced down their throat and their detention period increased, perhaps even indefinitely. Its a clever system and there is no judge or jury to convince, you just go straight to mental hospital without passing Go!

You cant argue against this craze for labelling everything as mental health issues, Doctors will not have their authority challenged. I even had a GP tell me how I could suicide myself!

You dont run a country by being nice!

You got a lot to learn, now obey your authority figures and back to work!

Ah yes the portmanteau of negative down votes in order to maintain the aspect of I'm wrong and the downvoters are right. Its the final say #FreeBrunoPowroznik

Oncosiphon piluliferum as well.

Dammit! so all this Kaizen training my employer paid for me to take 20 years ago, is actually Scrum?

Scrum is the bastardization of Kaizen and Agile.

>the one the “caring progressives” keep voting for.

And the alternative is what?

Keep on hoping the oligarchs will share their wealth and it will "trickle down"?

It’s boggles the mind how one can look at the long arc of history and come to the conclusion caring progressives were the problem all along.

No big company I have worked at was stable. (otherwise, I'd still be working at my first employer). Stability is something I've strongly valued, but I've also found, it's basically non-existent in this career field. Companies are always buying each other, getting bought, having bad quarters, etc. Unless you're one of those 100x developer rock stars, (or sales/marketing), you're going to be vulnerable to being "rightsized" out.

I can also say that pay has not been the best at the larger companies, either. Though benefits packages tend to be more generous.

But at the end of the day, if those are supposed to be the compelling reasons to try to work, and stay at a larger company, then no thanks, because it's a greatly undeserved reputation.

As for small companies; yes, there's way more opportunity to learn, and way more freedom and latitude, and I'd even say career mobility is better. On the other hand, some small companies are run like total shit. But at the end of the day the risk (instability) is worth it.

My worst interview experience: Company had their own custom hackerrank test set up. Timed. It failed to execute on my laptop. (Maybe browser plugins? I tried a different browser; still no joy) - I tried a few things, including using the browser debugger, and in the 30 minutes allotted, I couldn't succeed.

So I asked the recruiter to talk to the hiring manager to give me another shot with a different computer, and never got a response.

Mind you: they also had a horrible recruit process of filling out paperwork on their web site; including a form-entry version of your resume that you already uploaded. Plus various other forms to fill out and disclaimers to sign. Honestly, the worst I had ever encountered.

Since then, this company has had 3 different recruiters (one internal, two external) try to contact me for different positions, but the first one asked for the same process of going through their careers website and filling out all the forms again - even though my previous record was still there: because it was a different position, it had to be done again. That's when I bailed.

I've seen a lot of companies that ask for a copy of your CV and also ask you to fill out a form with fields for all the information on a typical resume. That's a red flag that a company has some bad process going on behind the scenes.

I presume they're looking for inconsistency that could indicate a lack of conscientiousness.

At times when I have been anxious to get hired, I have had no problem demonstrating that I can fill out a bunch of redundant forms when required.

Sometimes you need to be able to do that sort of thing, even in the best organizations.

On the other hand, I don't think I'd intentionally add that to my hiring process.

There are better ways to check for conscientiousness than saying, "please do this redundant activity perfectly."

I knew it! This Greek Bioweapon will continue to be used with impunity!
