Would this service notify parents if such a thing happened ? I haven’t see it in their official announcement.

I posted several times how Ivermectin saved my life. The mods at HN have immediately removed by comment as soon as I posted it. Goes to show they are being told to extinguish any sign of dissent over Covid treatment. Scary

That's not how we roll, so it must have been something else.

Edit: it sounds like you're talking about https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27992387. Mods didn't touch that comment. It was killed by software, most likely because you've been breaking the site guideline that asks people not to create new accounts for every few posts they make.

Speaking of which, would you please stop? We ban accounts that do that. You needn't use your real name, of course, but for HN to be a community, users need some identity for other users to relate to. Otherwise we may as well have no usernames and no community, and that would be a different kind of forum. https://hn.algolia.com/?sort=byDate&dateRange=all&type=comme...

You do understand that a single anecdote is neither compelling nor conclusive. Many people recover from covid naturally. That's why we do science so that we don't have to take the word of random people on the internet

I know two people that died from covid early this year even though they were taking ivermectin. Anecdotal, I know...

I posted this previously but HN moderated my personal story. —> Story of how I came close to losing my life and how Ivermectin saved me. Ivermectin just saved my life. I woke up with thick mucous and blood that I couldn’t extricate or cough up and called my doctor and the hospital. They threw up their hands and said there is nothing we can do, monitor your saturation levels and let us know if you feel faint. And within 8 hours I could not walk or talk, my wife called the hospital and they said I need to be brought into ER. A friend of ours who was taking prophylactic treatment with Ivermectin brought in his medication and begged us not to go ER and wait for 6 more hours. I was put in touch with one of FLCCC doctors who immediately asked me to take Ivermectin and prescribed a steroid to ease my respiratory issue. 6 hours has passed, the symptoms started to stabilize and reverse. I was able to talk, walk and drink. Within 10 hours my saturation levels turned around. I still continued the protocol for the next 2 days, I was out of the woods with barely a sore throat. Continued the protocol and even the sore throat was gone. I am as good as new. My PCP is dumbfounded and refuses to acknowledge the work of ivermectin.

Are steroids not known to be an actually effective treatment for Covid? Are you just trolling?

I’m not trolling. Woke up scared to DEATH ! 3 weeks ago to date. blood and mucus in the sink and back of throat. I only had one steroid. All of the treatment was primarily Ivermectin. I am unbelievably lucky to be alive.

Due to lockdowns and remote work I gained unhealthy weight and the morning I woke up with that thickest mucus and blood in my entire life I knew I have become one of those people I read on the newspapers. Basically the hapless feeling of being handed the death warrant. I am still shaking as I write this. No need to troll. I’m sharing my story so others don’t need to needlessly die. They can research and seek treatment ask their doctors if they are infected.

I'm glad you got better. I wish you good health going forward.

Until relatively recently, wasn't talking about ivermectin in conjunction with covid basis for suspension from Twitter?

If so, and Ivermectin is useful in treating people with Covid under specific circumstances, are Twitter not responsible for spreading disinformation which could have prevented people from having _some_ treatment?

It's still apart of youtubes guidelines. [1]

First they built a walled garden beautiful on the inside and excoriated competitors [1] for their lack of privacy. Now that the frogs have walked into the walled garden, they have started to boil the pot [2] . I don’t think the frogs will ever find out when to get off the pot.

Been scanning the answers for a solution, I am 100% on Apple ecosystem and I am all for protecting little children but as others have pointed out nothing is stopping them from colluding with the government in future to say scan for political dissent: - weaponizing memes against politicians as “hate speech” - memes against government suppressing dissent - and we can look what happened to Uighurs

Can Samsung phones that are de-googled work ? I am specifically interested in a new phone that Samsung launches, can it be degoogled ?

We also saw HN shadow banning entire IP CIDR blocks because they didn’t like argument against fleeting CDC guidance that was put forth or the Chinese lab origin theory in 2020. You can’t register from these CIDR blocks. If you had an account before the comments would just end up in a black hole. Dang can explain.

That is false. So was your other false claim that I replied to (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28093879).

Please stop creating accounts to break HN's rules with.

Any proofs will be great here.

@dang why?

@dang is that true? :O

Where I live plumbers make more than an average software engineer. Owner operator plumbers make close to half a million a year. And don’t get me started on Plumbers operating a min of 5 trucks they make atleast a million and half. I know this because my brother law is a plumber.

I'm in California and I had a water leak on the property that cost me $500 on my water bill. My water provider offered a credit for the overage if I can prove that I fixed it. A local plumber charged me $400, provided me with the exact paperwork to send in, and I got a $500 credit.

What a wild economy. I have no complaints, I understand why it works that way. And all my plumber had to do was smile, provide a bit of customer service, and repair one pipe.

Plumbers produce real value, i.e. the total value of the world is higher after they finish their work. This cannot be said for lawyers.

Or most software developers.

Software developers make the world a better place.

Unfortunately, most of they ways in which they do so were already done in the 70s. It's just repeating that work in more modern languages / stacks.

Some software developers make the world a better place. Many produce software that ultimately not that useful, and in the worst case scenario, actively harmful to society. Is the world a better place because of Apple, Amazon, or Google? Eh, you can make an argument either way. Is it a better place because of Facebook or Twitter? Unambiguously no.

That may be true, but the same could also be said about plumbing.

That's an interesting question.

Some software is valuable according to this definition, e.g. Google search. Some is not, e.g. Google ad algorithms.

Software is an enabler. It depends what it's enabling.

Would be interesting to know the proportions.

To clarify a piece of what you've said, devs working on Google ad algorithms are valuable to companies who are advertising. Your point is a higher level one that what these companies are buying from Google isn't of net value to society overall, even if it is of value to them.

Google search may be useful in the present time it is used, but Google logs people’s searches and effectively spies on the most personal thoughts and ideas people have. This could prove to be dangerous to those that are considered to be outside of mainstream society, etc.

> Where I live plumbers make more than an average software engineer

But the plumbers all use Google and have iPhones... But they aren't getting any stock from the companies making these as part of their comp package.

What's a plumber do with 5 trucks?? You can't drive more than one, right?!

A plumber with five trucks isn't so much a plumber anymore as a business owner employing five other plumbers.

And the reality of that is almost certainly not as rosy as you are being led to believe.

Is this a joke ? The news media seems to be conflating Internet with web. The whole idea of the internet is decentralization, “PBS for the internet” in my opinion would look like the “Great Chinese Firewall”

https://www.wired.com/1997/06/china-3/

And eventually like this https://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Police-State-Undercover-Surve...

Just pull the plug. Turn off WiFi or Ethernet for 15 min work blocks see if that works. Better than installing crapware and teaches you self control at the same time.

> That’s a question Mike Conley, 49, grappled with earlier this year. The software engineer, based in Indiana, US, had been seeking a new role after losing his job during the pandemic

This is ageism. I hope he realized this after 10 6 rounds of interviews.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19507732

Ageism absolutely is a problem in our field (I've seen/heard many people even openly boast of ageist hiring practices), but I don't know that ageism was the reason in that quoted case.

Not to invalidate ageism, there are many threads about younger people's interviewing experience that match this. The competition (other candidates) are doing much more than that, and also studying and practicing leetcode much longer than I am willing to.

Well, one way that this works, is that older folks, that have gotten used to working in an environment of mutual respect, and have some modicum of self-respect, are less likely to put up with BS, as opposed to someone younger, who may have come from a ... less professional climate.

The idea is to drive out older, less-pliant potential employees, in favor of newer ones, who can be molded into a shape the corporation prefers.

Have you ever seen a couple that has gotten married later in life? Many times, it may be a second (or more) time for one or both of them.

They need to make massive compromises. Both have gotten used to supporting themselves, and keeping their own counsel. They generally both have a lot of property, maybe grown kids, careers, etc. Usually, they don't actually need each other, for more than emotional support. They each do fine, on their own. It's a relationship of equals.

It can be a challenge to make it work, but when it does, it's amazing. I have known many couples like that.

I understand why corporations don't want to put effort into working with older folks, but it can be well worth it.

So many times, when I see these awful, Jurassic-scale disasters, made by companies that are staffed exclusively by younger folks, I say to myself "That was a really great idea, but they completely pooched the release. Why didn't anybody raise any red flags?"

The answer is generally, that no one on staff had enough experience to understand the ramifications of many decisions, and often, they were afraid to countermand ideas put forth by their superiors.

Couple that with 20-something CEOs, who are often fearfully insecure, and you have a recipe for disaster.

I've been told by at least one manager that he disliked older devs because they are much more likely to push back against against poor management and refuse to put in overtime.

Perhaps, but I can say that I am over 40 and I can tell when the enthusiasm for my candidacy dies after they see my face that it's not due to anything but ageism.

and I'm in an underrepresented group, we all have the ability to conform our experiences to the reason that matches what other people say will limit our opportunities. It is equally important to weigh each experience against the similar experiences. I've seen plenty of linkedin posts and blogs about people bragging about their quests to get competing offers in tech, some interviewed at 60 companies and did 100 interviews, when my tolerance is 12 companies and maybe 15 interviews. Some did 700 hours of leetcode, where my tolerance is maybe 5 hours. The dataisbeautiful and some employment subreddits have flow charts that show similar quests to get an offer, visualizing how much rejection and time is used inefficiently.

Like I said, not to invalidate anything, these experiences are so common amongst the whole pool that it has to be weighed accordingly.

What's stopping you from claiming you spent 700 hours on Leetcode?

(Not everything people say online is true.)

Ok. Not the point.

It wouldnt take me 700 hours to get familiar with all the abstract problems and concepts I’ll encounter, but it would take me a very long time to, and longer to synthesize solutions that are above average, and regurgitating that on the spot for an interview in a quicker time than other candidates.

An example of pervasively inefficient hiring practices, worse than described here, that would undermine the ageism conclusion

https://reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/p1ba3t/oc_visu...

It seems to me that ageism actually has some value.

People never got any smarter, but the nature and details of group activity have changed over time.

After a career of delivering products for boutique manufacturing companies, I'd say that my ability to pass a modern interview suite is essentially nil. My last gig for a company with modern practices taught me that it's no fun in any case as design devolves into manufacturing (perhaps for good reason).

Give me a young body, and I'd look into purposefully arcane careers with little remuneration. Blacksmithing perhaps.
