Spoken like a guy who's never been to France.

Classic drive by internet trope.

Maybe try a little harder, have an informed opinion about something.

China is an example of protectionism working. The world is not governed by simple rules.

I have a google doc called "The No Project".

Every day I try and add something that I have said "no" to. Projects, feature requests etc. I don't always have an entry, but it keeps No top of mind.

Not exactly a constraint, but....

The problem with that is you become the "no guy" even when yes is the right answer. Saying no to bad things is good, but you don't want to look too hard for reasons to say no lest you say no to something worth doing.

The problem is, I'm the "yes guy".

Yes.

Every non US country needs this now. Currently they have critical infrastructure that is controlled by a potential adversary.

Not in this case. It's a learning accelerator, like having an experienced engineer sitting next to you.

And using a hosted email service is like having hundreds of experienced engineers managing your account around the clock!

I would describe it as the opposite- like having an inexperienced but very fast engineer next to you.

That too!

I'm using it to learn unfamiliar languages and frameworks.

You have a point, but I think the distrust was initiated by the Thatcher/Reagan neo liberal turn.

In the early 80s, I remember mass layoffs in the headlines every day. Often older, long term employees, who were more expensive. And company share prices would go up on those announcements.

When I started my professional career in 1986, I was fully aware I was an expendable cog. It didn't make me less professional, but it did make me less loyal. I wasn't planning to work for the same company for 40 years.

Sure enough, 5 years later, the company was acquired and virtually every employee fired. 2000 people. Many of whom had given 20 years to the company.

The acquirer just wanted our customers.

"an uptick in people believing that property crime should not be prosecuted at all".

Really? Do you have evidence??

Huh... I used to live in poverty in order to do the things I loved.

Now I have a very comfortable life, but not much time to do the things I love.
