Well this has to be a first..

The article mentions more than farmers using the data. Not sure how anyone can take you seriously when the first paragraph mentions oil companies using the data as well..

And what do they use the data for, exactly? If it was vitally important to their operations and profitability, don’t you think the authors would have explained specifically how they would suffer if this data was discontinued?

The reason they don’t is obvious. They don’t use this data at all. The government uses it to monitor their emmissions and browbeat them into funding green initiatives to pay for their carbon sins. It’s used to make charts that congressmen use as props on the house and senate floor when they promote climate regulation. It’s used to make sensational fundraising emails for the Sierra club and eye-catching headlines at NPR and CNN.

But also one guy at the Iowa State extension office used it in a few papers, so yeah, farmers use this vital information, too.

It's fairly simple to keep these devices isolated and if you have a decent firewall, you shouldn't have much to worry about. Keeping them in a separate, internet-only VLAN with peer to peer isolation is typically the standard protocol. That said, in a lot of cases, even keeping the isolated doesn't resolve any privacy concerns. Also, with some devices, you have to open up mDNS.

I have had Caseta in mine for over 5 years.. only one failed out of like 16.

I didn’t think lotr used cgi

It does, most notably perhaps for things like the Ents and large parts of the battle in RoTK (e.g. Army of the Dead, Oliphaunts). It just did so much practically that it's one of those films where it might be a bit difficult to delineate if you aren't looking closely, similar to films like Fury Road.

Andy Serkis was great, but not as good at shape-shifting. For LOTR renderfarm WETA bought a bunch of SGI 1200 dual core Pentium III 700MHz servers with 1GB RAM, 9 GB SCSI disks all running RedHat Linux. I've read at some point they had 192 SGI 1100 and 1200 servers working.

It’s mind blowing that you can rent one VM in the cloud with the same spec.

Here’s an example with nearly one kilocores: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/siz...

Gollum? The Balrog?

Pre-CGI it looked like this: https://www.galaxus.de/im/Files/1/8/4/9/5/2/0/9/gollum_serki...

It does, absolutely everywhere? Down to fully CGI characters like Gollum.

It didn't use anywhere near as much as the hobbit, but lots of things are enhanced. I have a similar problem with Avengers/Marvel which just doesn't look great to me. Avatar did look very good though. The main problem I have with CGI is if the story isn't there, which for me is definitely the case with most Avengers movies which are just a mess.

the actor that played gandalf ian mckellen? had a minor breakdown on set after he was made to stand on a greenscreen for multiple days.

That was on the set of The Hobbit, not LOTR, which used far less CGI

I’m American and don’t lock my doors

Missed the Trump phone announcement?

Absolutely anyone with even $50K can sell and market their own Android phone using an ODM.

I was into machining right out of high school. After layoffs and plant closings I got into IT, now networking. I’d never make the kind of money I do now if I hadn’t of made that career change! I love my job too.

Lutron offers a variety of styles that work near instantly. I’ve been using them for years.

I read a lot of AP articles that aren't verbatim press releases.. you must be in the classifieds or something.
