I mean, it worked for Oracle right?

I would argue. This is too brought a stroke. Federalism has been stripped away, yes, but if it had been done with some other rules in place and notifications so that smaller organizations can effectively pick up the baton, I would argue it could have worked better.

The first part of your post and second part seem to contradict each other; please explain.

Several or handful would be 7-11 in my book

It’s a quality I’ve run into with a couple people: young or old, once they’ve ossified into thinking they are Better and Smarter than everyone else, they stop being curious and simply start mandating their wild “truths”

I’m sure we’ve all done it at one time or another, but repeated as habit without learning seems to speak of a certain kind of personality.

I wonder if adding congestion pricing in small cities to certain intersections or stretches of road would work the same way. if people really want to go through the busiest intersections or areas, then they’re going to have to pay a little bit.

Then people question whether they are going to go through, or pay a little bit to keep up the infrastructure if they do.

I think that would have the opposite effect. Instead of most cars going through the busy intersection (which is probably busy because it's the main way to get from A to B) more cars would go through side roads to avoid the toll. And then you have more cars going through mainly residential streets.

Google Maps and Waze are already causing this without the toll. In my town, you'll always be routed down two residential, 25 mph roads to avoid the congested part of Main St.

My town combatted this by allowing free parking on the bypass on both sides. Now it is practically a single lane road and you will hate every second you spend on it if you don't live there.

It's one thing to have it for a whole downtown area, applying it to individual intersections or roads is going to be a nightmare for drivers and just generate more and more surveillance infrastructure.

Isn’t the surveillance battle already lost? For at least a couple years now? At least in Europe it feels like you’re passing a camera every couple minutes.

Guh, NK Jemisin :Q I tried getting through a few chapters of three of her books and haven't felt so... Pushed? Talked at? Bored? Hadn't grimaced internally and externally as much with an author in a while.

They feel juvenile, trying SO hard. Using a different person perspective in one of them to hamfisted effect, as opposed to someone like Tamsyn Muir who integrates that device for good reason and to brilliant effect.

I gave NK a solid try and was appalled at how in the world anyone could think these are engaging.

Fellow climber/coder... Where you climbing these days?

Sick now, but till last year it was Mt woodson/tahquitz rock/the eastern sierra. When I lived in the bay it was pinnacles, obscurities in the Santa Cruz mountains, and lovers leap/Yosemite/etc

Do. Less.

all the dogs and furniture and hobbies and subscriptions and running around. Grasping, grasping, grasping...

my partner and I are people of simple means. We garbage pick or get off Facebook marketplace most of our stuff for super cheap (nice OLD stuff... Which I repair!) but have a fairly nice home that we’ve bought. She saved a lot just working for the post office in there pay: She didn’t go anywhere, and enjoys things like house cleaning and doing the dishes and reading. It’s the same as the Buddhist monks I spent time with. I give this example and people flat out rage at me, saying how awful a life that is. But my partner is one of the kindest, happiest people and adores simple things (she's also really fit and stellar in bed, so that helps...) She has found ways to legitimately enjoy the small moments and being present in life, not chasing a bunch of shiny flashy things all around the world. I’ve learned a lot from her.

In short: we don’t need AI, we need to just do less and learn to get back to simplicity. THAT would afford time to socialize.

I liked the answers from both of you. I can see both sides.

At the end of the day though? Yeah, maybe just a good reminder for us all to get outside and meet people.
