That’s because the globally talent works much longer hours at lower salary while in US you have to pay 100k for each h1b. Let’s get rid of the ridiculous administration first and then talk about greedy ceo.
Having foreign workers filling the jobs for American companies working on US soil and sending the money home is no better for Americans than having them working in their own countries.
Say what you will about this administration, God knows they have flaws. However, they're the only one that has taken steps to actually attempt to help American workers in a generation or more. Every other one has been a revolving door of shipping jobs out or importing cheap foreign labor in.
This is rather evidence that this requirement (at least sometimes) does what it should do: it disincentivizes US branches of companies to hire foreigners in the USA by making such hires more expensive.
Thus, instead foreign branches of US companies hire foreigners. Why the complaints: now in the USA less foreigners get hired instead of US citizens, exactly what was requested.
Well I made songs with my lyrics that brings tears and memories to my audience. Don’t know what other creator things you are talking about, but this to me is creating.
Well, at least you asked a computer over a series of requests to statistically generate a work based on it having previously ingested lots of works by actual creators and your audience liked it, and I won't take that from you.
How come is it the tech industry to blame? Trump’s election result is because of the decades of de-industrialization and undereducated people left out of the growth during this time. I don’t see why tech industry would be the first to blame.
You can still provide support too if you want to. You just need to ask the user what their query was, what response they got, and what response they would be expecting. You can then as the expert either spot their problem immediately, or you can run the query and see for yourself what is going on.
Sure it is a possibility that the ticket will end up closed as “unable to reproduce”, but that is always a possibility. It is not like you have to shut off all support because that might happen.
Plus many support requests are not about the content of the api responses but meta info surrounding them. Support can tell you that you are over the api quota limit even if the content of your prompt was not logged. They can also tell you if your request is missing a required parameter or if they have had 500 errors because of a bad update on their part.
... but why is not responding to a request for zero retention today better than not being able to respond to a future request? They're basically already saying no to customers who request this capability that they said they support, but their refusal is in the form of never responding.
Greed is too easy as a target.. industry space has shifted because of slower innovation and less growth, so cost cutting being more a focus would be a reasonable strategy
If your company is already profitable to the tune of billions annually, "cost cutting" isn't necessary. You're just cutting people out of jobs and out of economic participation in society -- which affects a far larger group than just themselves when those folks can't spend their salaries in other businesses.
There is no justification for "cost cutting" when it hurts the larger economy. If the company were losing money, that would be different, but these mass layoffs are all from firms that make obscene, enviable levels of profit. It's greed.
If a company is making $10 billion in annual profits, and they discover that they're spending $100 million on a useless project, are they morally obligated to continue that spending indefinitely?
There is no justification for "cost cutting" when it hurts the larger economy.
It is not good for the economy to have people doing work that doesn't produce value.
> It is not good for the economy to have people doing work that doesn't produce value.
This is a political statement, not an economic one. What is or isn't good for the economy is up to the goals of that economy. In Japan, for example, they've more or less adopted the opposite principle as an important plank in their political system. Or perhaps it would be better to say that they've adopted the idea that people having jobs is more important than those jobs having a direct connection to some measure of productivity.
And then your kids and their same generation would be replaced by their peer kids from hard working boys and girls from India and China. Unfortunately curiosity only works with brilliant minds. Normal minds plus curiosity is useless.
I think the advice is good for younger children. The author is using 14+11 as an example. Very engaged parents can have a tendency to overdo it, so it's probably a good reminder.
As kids get older, they need to learn how to struggle and overcome struggles. (I would still caution against "forcing" math.) But yes, you need to start engaging hard work and determination.
Btw, the two are not mutually exclusive. Young children should be praised for struggling at things so they begin learning that skill, too.
As a Chinese, you know what you can't talk about.
As an American we are "surprised" when our "free speech" results in overt government-sponsored censorship.
You can still say whatever the hell you want, unless you're actively inciting violence against protected minorities. You just have to do it on one of the many social media platforms that aren't owned by China.
He did say "sometimes Einstein is on the other end, and sometimes it's a drunken child. You have no idea when you pick up the phone which way its going to go.", so I think that's still a valid thing for him to complain about.
LLMs totally violate our expectations for computers, by being a bit forgetful and bad at maths.
> I find these new pimps scarier than the old sort in that they pretend to have clean hands
The old one does. And I disagree this is worse, as it’s probably just you never encounter the old model yourself or not knowing the history enough to do the comparison. From the book I read, across cultures and societies, old model of pimping is very brutal, on both the client and the server sides.
