Hmm. I use arm64 macports instead of homebrew, and as far as I know, I download prebuilt binaries from macports without issue even on Tahoe -- are they signing them with an approved account? Or did they force me to build everything from scratch, like the old days, and I haven't noticed?

This doesn't affect most prebuilt binaries. It specifically affects what Homebrew calls "casks," which are redistributions of .app bundles (which come with additional restrictions via Gatekeeper, unlike a "simple" binary).

Also, the longer the context window, the more likely the LLM derangement/ignoring safety. Frequently, those with questionable dependence on AI stay in the same chat indefinitely, because that's where the LLM has developed the ideosyncracies the user prefers.

By firsthand reports of AVP users, it is.. apparently it feels like a real presence in your space, like hanging out in person.. and their recollections of the conversations weren’t of calls but of visits. The main downside being that there are so few other friend/family users, because it’s prohibitively expensive, niche, and geeky, and those that do these VR calls still do them infrequently because it’s a hassle to break out the device if you don’t use it regularly, and uncomfortable to wear for too long, let alone they typically need to coordinate calls in advance.

Still, if I were to have a long-distance relationship with a tolerant partner, or one of us traveled frequently or for long periods, I would be tempted to consider these so we could watch a show or movie and hang out despite the distance.

I’ve noticed very recently (last several weeks) Siri (via my HomePod) is able to competently answer some very nuanced world knowledge questions that are sourced to random but still reputable websites — it appears to paraphrase enough to appear to be directly answering your question and then cites the source website. It only seems to get fouled up if it’s possible to confuse the question for something supposedly actionable that it chokes on. I have an Amazon Echo in the same room and usually direct such questions to Alexa, but trial Siri every so often to check for progress. And suddenly Siri just started giving appropriate answers with citations. It’s like they just hooked up something new to the Siri knowledge graph, and it’s pretty good.

Bah! This stupid mistaken rumor will not die. SPR AVS is the USB Power Delivery 3.2 spec for Standard Power Range + Adjustable Voltage Supply. Apple announced their support of SPR AVS in their new dynamic 40 watt charger that can alter its voltage in small increments and can peak at 60 watts, specifically to fast charge the new iPhone 17 Pro.

The erroneous expansion of SPR AVS to "Spatial Relay Audio-Visual Sync" was entirely fabricated by Patently Apple, and reported on by other sites like TechRadar, which shortly after realized the error and corrected it with an update in the middle(!) of the article. This video cites under its sources that same TechRedar article which has the correction, which apparently escaped their notice.

Apologies, I posted this I was interested in more references, but was overcome with enthusiasm.

I can’t flag this item to have it deprecated.

Without knowing anything about their routing, I think grandparent is saying they likely were on the same vector, perhaps same destination.

wow, your interpretation is much better than whatever went through my head. i'm going with too early in the morning. not enough coffee.

SPR AVS is probably confusion -- it's likely the new USB PD3.2 Standard Power Range Adjustable Voltage Supply used to fast charge the iPhone 17 Pro phones with Apple's new 40/60watt charger.

It seems improbable that SPR AVS is same the initialism for two distinct new separate features. Apple announced the charging one. This bluetooth alternative is pure unfounded speculation.

It's interesting how easily Google results rankings are manipulated by bad actors, and how unvetted the scams are in paid adverts on and through Google. The web is untrustworthy, and Google transparently passes it to users. We'd probably be better off if Yahoo's quaint curated list of sites had won out.

Well, SEO, I get that this kind of gaming is hard to prevent, not at Google's scale.

But the AdWords scams? Or all the other fake ad scams, chumboxes and god knows what? The complete lack of audits around something that actually causes money to change hands should be outright banned.

At the high end of ads, think large brand TV spots, you got entire teams of lawyers involved to make sure licensing, actor releases, technical details, corporate identity and a myriad of other things are taken care of.

But at the low end? Some rando from St Petersburg can post an ad for a book "uncovering Western lies about NATO expansion", some Indian can post an ad for "Norton Removal", some American an ad for a f2p game with content that clearly does not describe the actual gameplay or some Chinese can post an ad for penile enlargement pills - and none of the four will get even one human eye on the ad before the campaign goes live and the ads are displayed to actual users, even though all four either violate Western laws outright or are at least banned by the providers/networks.

And the problem isn't just limited to Google, Youtube, AdWords, Unity Ads [1], Taboola [2], Outbrain [3], Facebook/Insta [4] - it's everywhere, the entire low range of ads is infested to the core. Self-service ad platforms should be shut down, period - the industry has shown that "self regulation" doesn't work.

Yes, and that same lack of lawyers/friction is what also allows legitimate small businesses to thrive. I've worked for many, and out of those many, none of them had lawyers involved at all.

It is all about balance. Google could do more here, however the answer is not as obvious as you might think. Especially in an age where identities get stolen often and the lag time on catching said fraud is quite long.

The issue is that the entities mentioned are doing...nothing at all. Not even basic MANUAL identity checks and payment checks. Automated checks work very well until they don't.

> Google could do more here, however the answer is not as obvious as you might think.

Oh it is. A basic background check alone done by an actual human to see if the business is actually real, let's say this costs Google 1h @ 40 dollars plus 20 dollars for credit bureau fees. Google can offload that cost to the advertiser - even for a small cookie store, that's hardly an expense.

And after that, vet the campaign material for each asset. When you have 200 dollars in ad spend (which isn't much), 10 dollars should go pretty far in having a human see if the "pizza store" didn't just place an ad for penile enlargement.

> Automated checks work very well until they don't.

The key thing is, the entire ad industry is amoral. No one cares about fraud or brand reputation any more, not when you see chumbox ads on "reputable" newspapers. So everyone seems to think "why should I leave a few dollars on the table?".

At what point does Know Your Customer kick in for ads?

Also, HN hates machine generated replies, especially the lengthy and overly verbose slop variety -- I think that probably eclipsed any perceived rudeness.

My understanding (without having played the game) is that you choose an ideology for your character (equivalent to fascist, communist, capitalist or centrist) and whichever of those you chose, it satirizes you for it by making you an absurd parody of whichever was your chosen ideology. So perhaps the only way to not "feel mocked" personally is to play through using an ideology you don't actually hold? Or, try not take it personally. But, I admit, your reaction makes me want to actually play it next to test my ideological sensitivity.

via your choices you "become" aligned with one of those options

parent commentor isn't entirely off-base because much of the narrative in the game is about the state of the fictional society after a failed communist revolution so much of the "vibe" of the game is grounded in a populace whose dream failed. the game is more sympathetic or at least more interested in leftism. i chose to play as a fascist art critic who believes he's a famous disco star.

disco elysium is definitely not advocating for collectivism or any other ideology, though. great game, one of the best i've ever played.
