Many web interfaces use iOS style toggle and somehow use "double negatives"(?). It's a binary decision but still, they somehow make it seemingly confusing like you mentioned. It's like - is the text label, the result of what happens after you click this, or is it showing the current state?

That's my pet peeve as well. It should read "activate feature x" not just "feature x" and then change to "deactivate feature x".

Perfect! Thank you.

I have to thank you too. I would've not known where to even look for that.

Several modern cars are actually moving in the direction of gaining more and more central control competitively. Last year we had to remove the fuse in the car battery for maintenance, and also because the battery needed a little cleaning - while we were in a remote village with no access to proper internet connection. Little did we know that after re-inserting the same fuse back to the battery, the media system would stop working. The media LCD screen started showing a "Enter the pin to unlock the media system" screen! And we do not have the pin, we were never given a pin. Hence we lost access to the car GPS and media system altogether in an unknown territory. We somehow got back to home and had to book an appointment with the car dealership for the technician to unlock our car media system! He plugged his device and generated the pin that's signed/paired with our specific car and then used it to unlock the media system.

It is indeed scary that even car manufacturers are moving towards central control of every little thing in your car.

The last thing I want to see with all these tech companies following Apple's footsteps in a lot of things, is to see the auto industry becoming like Apple.

I'm sorry, but that's really funny to me - not because I'm laughing at your misfortunes of course, but because of how easily people forget history or are simply unaware of it.

Media systems locking due to the lack of power is not a new problem. I do remember having the exact same problem on my 1994 Passat, where the radio would lock itself and you had to go to the dealer to have it unlocked.

>>And we do not have the pin, we were never given a pin

Literally the same problem, except 25 years later :P Manufacturers almost never issued these special pins to unlock radios.

And like, disconnecting the battery has always been a problem in cars, BMWs, Mercs, Opels, Peugeots, Fiats - I've had them all and they all did something weird if you disconnected the battery - more often than not, a check engine light would pop up and you had to bring it to the dealer to clear it. This is not new.

We were not aware of that and that was definitely a new experience for us. My father owns a car bought a decade ago and we can easily fix and swap any parts we wish without having to worry about getting sign-off from the car "owners" :D I don't see why that would happen, and seeing that as a common practice among other car manufacturers does not make it any less annoying.

After reading your comment I felt like I was reading mine! I've been working on infrastructure automation too, and recently purchased a microcontroller kit to hack it and mess around with it.

Just connecting the microcontroller and turning on a LED light is satisfying sometimes. Right now I'm in that cycle where I hesitate to look at screens after work.

>They also end up making hammer factory factory factory factories

Funny but accurate article! I did not know they saw that as a problem in 2005, which means it could be a lot more factories by now.

I literally deleted Reddit app a week ago, and my mental health is in a better state. I can't imagine how much Reddit affected my mood.

I usually used it for fun, and had subscribed to some innocent technical subreddits, and memes that had nothing to do with politics or relationships; but eventually got dragged into these spiteful, petty, sort of ugly side of Reddit full of bad takes, top posts awarded for repeating same things over and over, namecalling, bullying kids, censoring people, etc.

The downvote button is used as a "The hivemind disagress with you, here is your -50 karma" and is never used for it's actual purpose which goes against the purpose of that feature.

Worst subreddit you should never visit are amitheasshole, relationshipadvice, programmerhumour, cats (they only post their dead cats for karma), pewdiepiesubmissions, dankmemes, worldpolitics, to name a few.

There are lots of popular karmawhores at the top of Reddit (like a shithead called u/gallowboob) that repost/steal posts from other subreddits to get karma shamelessly and he mods popular subs so he gets a pass, and he censors people that expose him.

Really, the Reddit drama is never ending and I'm glad I decided to come out of the pettiness of it all.

I love me some reddit drama and find it mostly hilarious. It helps not to take it too seriously.

Did you see the one about the guy who ate 3 feet of a 6 foot sandwich? https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/comments/ca7bdz/aita_...

I mean, where else are you going to find something like that? Not twitter.

Dunno. I've sort of embraced the dumpster fire and am happy to warm myself with the flames. It smells pretty bad at times, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a more amusing circus.

>Did you see the one about the guy who ate 3 feet of a 6 foot sandwich?

What is that post?! Can't tell is it's satire or people are seriously buying that.

That is something you need to consider, but then let go off when reading these kinds of reddit stories.

I enjoy it still. But every day I have to remind myself not to argue with people on the internet. I'm not a perfect human being; I often fail at this simple task.

>I can't think of anything more depressing that spending my lunch break in a work cafe with people I don't want to talk to, being flooded with fluorescent light, and thinking about how the rest of my working life will be spent in places like this.

This is the best way to put it! It's all make believe and facade. As naive as this sounds, we have to separate our work time and personal time. I don't know if that means we should have dual personalities akin to having different themes/profiles on phones, or we should have a clear separation of activities, but without one, is what leads to OPs path, and I have been there.

>someone who can intercept http near an IP where your domain name resolves can easily obtain an SSL cert with your domain name on it

Sorry to hijack this thread, can you please give me a keyword or link as to what this type of attack is called?

I have plans to host a domain, so wanted to know what this threat is called. Thanks!

I'm not sure what you'd call it other than man-in-the-middle.

The issue is that CA's (for various defensible reasons-- including that there isn't much better possible within their framework, it's not like they know you personally...) will issue a cert for your domain to any party that can throw a file up on it that their automation fetches via http.

In practice this means a MITM near your server (or, technically, anywhere between any CA that will issue certs for your domain and your server), or between your CA and the DNS results can get certs for your name and there isn't much you can do about it.

>I think we need to teach people who think they can solve every problem with some ML system a lesson in economics because this stuff is getting out of hand.

AI/ML has become one of the most hyped buzzwords lately. People are trying to find any and every area possible to push some kind of ML system into the project. Smart toothbrush that uses "AI" to predict the buildup of plaques. Smart shoes that uses AI to do some niche task... and so on.

I had so much trouble working around people that I would get an empty conference room. The gentle AC fan in the conference room would act as a "white noise" for me, which would help me concentrate. I then found this iOS app called Noisli that had white noise that helped. But working around people has always been challenging for me especially when they get into a conference call and you can hear squeaky noises of people from the other side of the call!
