I suspect there are even more H.265 than av1.

People want to use images outside of browsers too.

What apps are you using in 2025 that handle images but doesn't support webp?

I can't think of any on my Fedora desktop for instance.

Lots of websites that expect me to upload images only accept jpeg and png.

Another one I recently interacted with are video backgrounds for zoom. Those apparently can only be jpeg, not even png

Luminar Neo, for example, doesn't handle webp. And there's more than just Fedora, IIRC.

I have written a JPEG, GIF, and PNG decoder. All easily weekend projects. As for the other two I've attempted the same for:

JPEG2000: insanely complex and nonintuitive, especially the edge-cases and overly flexible encoding decisions

WebP: also complex, and effectively Google-proprietary

Thoughts on jxl?

have you tried QOI? ;)

Seems the elements are warrantied for 10000 hours but the drivers are not.

Possible but unlikely. The protocol is relatively simple, and what clients are out there have already been subjected to tons of untrusted input.

The question of whether that's a good thing is a different matter, however.

I've heard that argument... used multiple times, for an application which would basically never be in any other language but English.

I find it somewhat amusing that they had to find "scientists" to explain this, when the purple tinge is something that LED TV repairmen have been dealing with for around a decade now. However, they're correct that it's because the phosphor layer is getting damaged, probably because they're being driven too hard by the LEDs, which are now being optimised for brightness and recurring revenue instead of longevity and efficiency.

Also, I personally think spirited driving on a purple-lit nearly empty highway at night is a uniquely fun experience with an 80s-retro-futuristic vibe. The streetlights are merely accent lighting at that point; the highbeams are for actual visibility.

IMO benzene smells like gasoline (and AFAIK is mostly responsible for its smell), but somewhat sweeter and more concentrated.

It's a different, "aggressive" sweetness than that of chlorocarbons, which to me are far more pleasant.

Too bad they're all quite harmful otherwise.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/benzin has also become the word for gasoline in many languages.
