Wait, hold on. Is this actually an issue that needs a solution? It feels like Wayland is doing something very stupid here. Why not let apps control their windows? I cannot remember when an app stole focus last time. The only time this makes sense is while entering a password. But that is a very specific case that can be solved by having the password dialog on a protected desktop (ie. one with only that single window.)

> I cannot remember when an app stole focus last time.

You must not use Windows where every application comes with its own auto-updater, often stealing focus and minimizing your game once when the updater pops up, and then again when it restarts the main application it just updated.

Devs can't be trusted to not turn their users homicidal. Someone has to stop them for their own good.

This is purely anecdotal, but I think I’ve seen ChatGPT insert special space characters other than normal space. It also likes to use the different dash characters (en, em and hyphen) more than would appear in normal text.

Adding to the anecdata: ChatGPT can produce text with a variety of unusual Unicode characters. Possibly for detection.

I don’t understand why electrical grids are so problematic, but they seem plagued by corruption, incompetence, and poor planning everywhere.

Here in Sweden the grids was built by taxpayers and then sold off to a private company for maintenance and operation. That went as well as you can expect. Future development and growth is basically impossible as the private company has zero incentive or interest in laying new wire or upgrading old.

When you turn energy generation into a market, it opens up the possibility for huge amounts of money to be made by big players constraining supply at just the right times. Of course if properly competitive markets existed outside econ textbook models, it would solve itself, but unfortunately the barrier to entry is too high in the real world so competition is always limited to a few players who try to get as large as possible (gobbling up any smaller ones in the process).

This kind of profiteering by intentionally constraining supply when there was very high demand was literally something Enron became infamous for, but it still happens all around the world.

Of course, on the transmission and distribution side you can’t even try to have a market and there is always a natural monopoly, it’d just be impossible for anyone to overbuild a new grid in any service area. So turning a state-owned natural monopoly into a private one tends to turn out just as badly as anyone could expect…

We have had years of efficiency improvements which led to falling demand. There wasn’t much point in increasing grid capacity in this scenario.

All of a sudden that has changed (thanks to demand from EV’s, heat pumps and AI).

It’s going to take a while to turn the ship around.

Oof yea I believe it is similar in most US states and the idea of having more than One provider is wild to them yet we can have at least Two ISPs...

Don't forget that some states have their own grid that has no connection with outside grids

Only Texas [ERCOT], and they do it to avoid federal regulation.

I really like that USB port. It can probably be made to work in both directions (like USB-C). Does it require a special PCB thickness that is hard to come by?

I would highly recommend looking into Azure code signing. It is confusing to set up. But comes with instant reputation and ”only” costs 10$ a month.

EV certificates has always felt like an utter scam and extortion to me. At least now there is an alternative.

I’ve tried to convince all my friends to switch off Chrome for years. It’s an impossible battle. I don’t understand.

Each new decoder represents an increase in attack surface which is why not all video/audio formats supported by ffmpeg are enabled in Chrome. This is despite Chrome having ffmpeg as a depency. [caveat: this was the status quo when I last checked a couple of years ago]

Same. It feels like intentionally installing and using spyware at this point.

The damage they do is much worse. They practically control the evolution of the web standards at this point, thanks to their market share. They also get to dictate the dominant standard and stifle competition in associated domains like image formats. What makes it so insidious is that this damage is practically invisible to the regular users, unlike the spyware-like behaviors it exhibits.

This isn't a good reason. Firefox also doesn't support JPEG-XL. Let's wait until there is a memory safe decoder.

This is a chicken and egg problem. What is Mozilla's incentive in spending any effort on JPEG XL if Chrome doesn't support it? There won't be any demand for it from content creators until the majority browser adopts it.

The only way to protect the web users' interests against Google's commercial interests is to dethrone Chrome - no matter how farfetched that sounds. It's such a shame that the world managed to paint itself into a corner again inspite of the bitter experience with the earlier browser wars.

Mozilla has stated that they will support it as soon as a memory safe decoder is available. If Chrome doesn't support it then, it's reasonable to have this discussion.

Some countries (Poland?) has experimented with banning advertising in public spaces. Think bill boards. This has lead to very clean and good looking cities. I don’t think the it’s unreasonable to ban ads in other places too.

Here is the thread that likely sparked his resignation (if this is a resignation), and more specifically Linus’ response to Hellwig’s earlier comments regarding rust and the Linux kernel.

https://lore.kernel.org/rust-for-linux/CAHk-=wgLbz1Bm8QhmJ4d...

(Edit to include the correct name)

Linus seems unusually reasonable and kind in that response.

It seems his leave of absence has given fruits.

Old linus would have ticked off for even less, along with name calling and personal attacks.

I agree – I'll need to look this up myself, but I'd love to know what his self-reflection on his annoyance involved: I admit that I still need to do the same to learn restraint during disagreements with new collaborators, that I haven't had the experience to feel trust with yet. My anger's stopped me from productively working in informal standardization efforts within my org.

The only person to get to have it both ways it seems is Linus. In the past he's railed against c++ and it would be cold day in hell to see c++ code in linux.

To be fair, it's his tree. On the other hand, I am a little worried that Linus has been hypocritical in the past few years, but most of us get soft as we age I guess.

What is both ways about it here? The argument against C++ was never about a multi-language codebase being unacceptable.

Linus seems to genuinely believe that Rust is superior to C++.

Having used both, I agree.

Aisler is pretty good for prototyping. Wurth also supplies PCBs (with fantastic quality.)

Sometimes we need to give awesome tools to creative people and see what they come up with, even when we don't understand the implications ourselves.

I think millimeter accurate GPS is one of those tools. It has the power to enable so many things. Things we cannot imagine without using the tool itself.

40 cm vs 1 mm is the difference between landing a quadcopter smoothly or crashing it into the ground.

20 cm vs 1 mm is the difference between a robot navigating through a door or crashing into the wall.

20 cm vs 1 mm is the difference between mowing the lawn or cutting through your flower bed.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like we'll be getting millimeter accurate GPS anytime soon. The Genesis satellite might be a prerequisite though.

The government artificially limits civilian gps resolution. Millimeter gps would be a boon for hellfire R9X type explosive free ballistics.

This hasn’t been true for 24 years. Selective Availability was discontinued in May of 2000.
