[flagged] If you're black or female, Uber is more likely to overcharge or cancel your ride (mcclatchydc.com)

Flagged. This post is clearly on-topic, so to me this looks like a classic example of HN suppressing discussion of racism and sexism in the Silicon Valley startup community. I'm curious how it looks to the moderators.

Yeah, this is super frustrating and a big part of why the flag system is bad. There are real lessons for people building marketplaces here, but this system keeps them form being discussed.

Why does the driver accept the ride if they then cancel it?

ever experienced?

Why is it ridiculous? There is a cited study, which although uncorroborated (so far) but appear to be solid. Or are you saying that racism and sexism are not valid topics for discussion? My only issue with the post is the title, which implies that this is Uber doing this rather than their drivers, but that's a relatively minor quibble. Otherwise this appears to be a serious issue, and raises issues for services that require the use of real names or photos.

>"uncorroborated (so far) but appears solid" Get back to me when you have some real facts and just because something is "cited" does not make it a valid source.

The source is an NBER research group.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Bureau_of_Economic_Re...

They're pretty well-known and trusted.

If you follow Leslie Jones on Twitter, you'll know that this isn't crap. Leslie (@Lesdoggg) who is famous yet both black AND female has terrible luck with Uber.

Here is one example: https://twitter.com/Lesdoggg/status/776425898299957249

If you search around you can find a lot more horror stories from her and probably others.

I'm a white male so I've never had an issue. I love Uber, but they can certainly do a better job.

So because one person says they "never have a good experience" means that the whole company is making it difficult for black people to get rides?

Not even close to my point.

That's very honest of you and an interesting data point.

Why do you feel that way? Are you aware that much of this crowd (including myself) considers that incredibly sexist and misinformed?

I'll bite: Why?
