Even the burger menu doesn't have the small arrow to show where it came from. It feels like a continuation of the trend to remove hints UI about which things relate to each other.

Yes, and it's detrimental to the overall UX.

Tabs shouldn't be a touch brighter, they should be highly contrasted against inactive tabs.
