The article fails to mention that at this phase of the war, when we were trying to convince the Japanese to surrender, we were warning target cities of pending raids by dropping leaflets a few days beforehand. These leaflets advised civilians to evacuate the cities. Unfortunately few did, since it was unfashionable if not dangerous to heed such a warning in a militaristic society like Japan was at the time. Still, we put our bomber crews in danger to reduce the number of civilian casualties while bringing the war to an end.
