That newspaper project in the article looks like it came from

https://onezero.medium.com/the-morning-paper-revisited-35b40... which took me to here: https://calmtech.com/

For some reason I love this. There's something deeply satisfying about quiet technology. I wish I could get my local newspaper's front page scan like this.

I really like that too. I personally would like it if the front page were from this day from some random year in the NYT archive.

For example, today you might see the front page from March 23, 1936 today and then tomorrow it might be March 24, 1982.

BTW, in case anybody was wondering, the 31" eink display is $1500. That actually seems pretty reasonable to me.

This is cool, but I really wish the contrast of eInk displays would be improving. It’s still only around 1:10, a far cry from printed paper.

After seeing this, the IKEA CORRAS server rack in my living room needs a similar tasteful e-ink picture frame sitting atop it, for system status and general info.

This e-ink component includes red (for alerts): https://www.waveshare.com/12.48inch-e-Paper-B.htm

That's 16 seconds to update the display. I am familiar with the Kindle etc but this seems very long. I guess it doesn't matter too much for ambient display projects like this.

I found this example video of the display update process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mr6Lt0gKjsI&t=22m43s

Sigh. Good catch. Sadly, this won't work for my living room ambiance.

FYI Waveshare has both larger options, and some color e-ink displays as well.

I've been thinking of picking one up, possibly a color display.

Disclaimer: NOT affiliated with any of the companies above. I just want to build cool stuff.

Very nice! My own programming folder would have included MPW and Resorcerer.

Ha ha. Yeah, the dev icons displayed are chosen from a set at random — but you mentioned two apps that are, sadly, not in the list.

Easy enough to add though. Now, if I can just find the icons....

EDIT: Found "MPW Shell", added. Resourcerer seems to be a little harder to find.
