Don't Offer Me a Job That Requires Me to Relocate (mmaksimovic.dev)

Why would the author keep wasting their time applying to jobs in different cities with no indication of remote work in the req if relocating is a deal breaker? Why would you drag it out all the way to the offer stage without knowing basic expectations of accepting the job? I’m legitimately baffled.

My current position is remote only with no travel. It was advertised as on site in SF and regular travel. Seems that top engineers with skills can fill such positions remotely, but the company does not want to offer that perk to average engineers. I feel very fortunate and might just be lucky, but I think that there exist more opportunities than there appear on job boards.

I wasn't applying to anything. :)

A lot of the observations at the end are true everywhere. There are more opportunities in cities, but you have to trade off a bunch of quality of life things for that. And the pandemic left a lot of people unwilling to trade them off.

Depends. Some people (myself) love cities. In my eyes the quality of life drops off the moment I hit the suburbs. Driving everywhere? Having to own a car in the first place (and deal with the parking, insurance, gas, maintenance that comes along)? That's miserable.

It also very much depends on which city. The writer is writing from the perspective of Belgrade, which is quite a different city than say London, Berlin or NYC. The public transit is pretty mediocre and driving is very much the norm. I wouldn't want to live in that city either, and I've been lucky enough to spend quite a bit of time in it (do visit it though, especially in the summer it's beautiful).

So are you willing to move?
