Another way to say that, is that bigotries are so difficult to extinguish because they are so often predictive. That is, it may be an adaptive strategy to presume that I am an asshole due to my age and gender, until I demonstrate otherwise.
Stereotypes are a legitimate shortcut to critical judgment. But they are only shortcuts. Forming a conclusion of causation based on stereotypes is the epitome of sloppy, bigoted logic. And it happens a lot.
