What a lovely article. Well written, well thought out, no simple conclusions and very engaging.


Yes octopi are smart. But I don’t expect them to widely change our ideas about meat. I met someone recently who was raised culturally vegetarian - but now eats meat with the exception of pork. They cited pigs as being intelligent and emotional, to which I agree. I just cannot ever see a single species’ intelligence being a turning point for the consumption habits of the entire human species. I also do not understand the “ranking” of an organism’s intelligence correlating to human desire to eat it. Many (all IMO) animals are highly specialized and “intelligent” and people still don’t care.
