I personally find this sad because multi-GPU is an excellent way to optimize compute/watt for enthusiast scientific computing (Folding@Home etc).

Back when I was still contributing power to SETI@home I analyzed the results database and concluded that by and large GPUs did substantially more work/watt-hour and that the mid-range parts were the ideal price-point (GTX 1070 at the time); my best rig had 4x GTX 1070's in it which is an excellent balance in many respects. It's a dinosaur now, and when it finally croaks I don't know if I'll try to replace it.
