Just What Is It That Makes Today’s Homes So Different, So Appealing? (1956) (smarthistory.org)

@dang, the title is missing the first two words and a comma, “Richard Hamilton,”.

The article is about a collage of that title, not about homes.

The nice thing about the title is you can see how many commentors don't even attempt to read the article.

The title of that collage is so magnificent, I think letting it stand on its own is only fair. Also, it's good for HN readers to have to work a little: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&sor...

Edit: on the other hand, this thread turned out to be garbage and the title no doubt was the main reason for that. Maybe adding the year would have helped. I've done it belatedly now.

The gray. So much gray. Bones, cinderblocks and despair. That's what's appealing.

I'd comment on the article but the big "give us money" popup was immovable.

In my area, any house that isn't selling gets painted blue with an orange door. Stagnant and on the market for a few months? Have you tried painting it blue with an orange door? Works every time!

I've been removing browns and mustard yellows from my late 70's house for the last 5 years. I'm up for a more subtle colour palette.

How about a nice pastel?

Also, google up... Oh, I forget the term. "Heritage colors" or something like that. There are certain classic colors, time-tested, from over the past couple centuries, that really do the job well. Worth looking at.

There's probably a list at the Sherwin Williams site.

At my house we did this classic beige overall. Invented by Ben Franklin or something. And then accent walls of pastel sunset orange and a 1920s seafoam. It's nice.

Their ethereal unobtainability?

Wait a second, that's not a Banksy.

What's appealing about the basement I live in, is that I can see the entire place within one frame of view. Don't even need to really recruit my peripheral vision. It's so efficient.

This article is about a piece of art...not your living situation.
