Can we leave the current thread be? The other one has this really big reddit-level discussion where people think it's very important to remind everyone that there's a difference between buying a pork bellies in the Chicago Mercantile and slaughtering pigs.
And it's a chore to keep skipping it to look for news or insightful comments about the supposed superconductor. Which is what the thread was supposed to be about.
I've done the usual moderation things in that thread to try to dampen the offtopicness. That's a separate issue from merging dupes. Though I completely agree with you otherwise.
If there are subthreads there that ought to be ranked lower than they are, let me know here and I'll take a sterner look!

I intend to open up a discussion sometime about the declining quality of discussions on HN and make some proposals, when my schedule allows for, hopefully soon.
