OpenBSD Release Songs (openbsd.org)

This is the sort of quirky fun that characterized the early days of UNIX and computing in general. It's refreshing to see the BSD community keeping it alive and well.

Yes. It is this spirit that got me excited about computers. It's impressive that OpenBSD has remained consistent all these years. One of my all time favorite projects.

As much as I find less practical use for OpenBSD these days, I'm very glad it exists, both for fun and whimsical things like this and for some cutting-edge security research and implementation which actually works in a practical way.

With Linux growing ever more bloated and ever less Unixy, OpenBSD is more important to many people these days.

Anyone remember the Beos song[1]? Legit good.

No, but I remember the Cybermedia song [1]. Corporate anthems suck.

virtual (void) by the Cotton Squares

"and then I had to reboot a hundred times..."

I remember that. It came with the OS.

So many gems! May I humbly suggest in chronological order.

"Wizard of OS" (3.7): Blatant Pink Floyd derivation about WiFi drivers.

"Blob!" (3.9): Yet another driver song and the finale always cracks me up when the "sinners" are called out.

"100001 1010101" (4.2): Possibly the best summary of "OpenBSD philosophy" out of all the release songs.

"Games" (4.5): Music-wise, probably my favourite. How can frustration about the insanity that is ACPI turn into such a good song?

And excellent drums on "100001 1010101" !

At first I wanted to express disappointment and then I realized… This is open source. People did this for free.

People do this for free.

I am pretty sure these songs turned me into a die-hard OpenBSD fan back in the day. I remember first hearing of one on Slashdot at like 1 in the morning, and immediately shook my roommate awake to listen to it. He was not pleased. I thought it was good though.

Kinda disappointed "Wrap in Time" is not a rap song...

You have to head over to "The Legend of Puffy Hood" (3.4) [1] for your rap. Unless my memory is failing me, it is Theo de Raadt delivering part of it.

As a Monty Python fan, I gotta love "CARP License"
