Linus Torvalds adds arbitrary tabs to kernel code
The guy could've just said it was a minor formatting change and had a better chance of getting the PR approved, instead of presenting the nonsensical reason (the parser)?

But changing the tab to a space violated the clearly defined style guide for the kernel, so it wasn't an acceptable change

What do you mean? Reading the email exchange it looks like Linus pulled the commit and the committers description was accurate.
The tabs were then added back which I also think was the right thing to do.
