I don’t think this is news or anyone should be surprised.

Many documentaries and docu-dramas stretch the truth a lot and in some cases non-obvious ways to make events more dramatic.

One has to remember that it is entertainment first. And no guarantees have been made at anytime by Netflix to only tell you the viewer the truth and nothing but the truth.

Also I recall seeing horror movies openly use “based on a true story”- which is obviously not true.
