The copy on the homepage is very dramatic and reads as if Bandcamp has already turned against all its artists. It's been over a year since the second sale if I am calculating the dates correctly. Has Bandcamp changed at all?
I was delighted to discover Bandcamp a few years ago. In the modern Internet landscape, it was refreshing to discover a business that didn’t exploit artists and was unionised but still profitable. It was very disappointing to see it sold to Epic and to later have Songtradr lay off half the work-force.
I don’t know who’s behind Subvert but I thought it interesting that they have started the process of building a Bandcamp successor as a pre-emptive move (before the “enshittification” begins). Here’s hoping their co-operative model works and is sustainable over the long-term.
