There's a theory that Midjourney didn't want to pay for image hosting (which they were getting for free from Discord).


That has got to be a rounding error in their finances in comparison to the GPU time required to generate the images in the first place.


That must have been a LOOONNG time ago, I've been a user of MJ since ~version 3 a couple years back - and I remember custom scraping my images way back in the day and they were coming from Google Cloud Storage, e.g.

Images has been available on their website for quite some time.
