If you mean Microsoft abandoning their engine then their reasoning sounded as an excuse because they clearly have the capacity to work on it. They simply decided for other internal reasons to stop and just blamed it on Google/YouTube as it gets good PR points.
Anyway, that's why I've come up with the fix scripts that can make websites work with JS disabled. It can fix problems and even improve the usability of various websites.
I've been using this approach succesfully for a few years already with good results. So there is no reason to just abandon the idea when it's proven to work.
