I don't have kids and had never heard of sandra boynton, but I happen to be waiting for someone at a department store some years ago and idly picked up a copy of "not the hippopotamus" from a nearby rack of children's books to leaf through. I was really impressed with the quality of the writing and illustrations, and told myself I would go home and send the author a fan email, but then I googled her up and discovered she was already super famous :)
