[flagged] Musk Says He's 'Deleted' Popular Free IRS Tax Filing Program (thedailybeast.com)

The only people who are opposed to making it easier to file taxes are:

* People who profit from the complicated mess that is the current system

* Anarchists who simply wish to burn the entire system of government to the ground, presuming that they'll become successful regional warlords

What Elon's tweet says is that 18F has been "deleted":

Their account on Twitter/X seems to have just been deleted:

https://x.com/18F

Which is a shame, because 18F did a lot of really good work, including creating login.gov.

For those unfamiliar, 18F is (was?) a group within the GSA that other agencies could contract with for help building government websites.

You just know Musk defenders having been going through some serious cognitive dissonance the last few months.

The human mind is capable of amazing feats of mental gymnastics.

And instead of admitting they were wrong they will dig in even deeper.

A non functioning one even more so.

https://www.irs.gov/filing/irs-free-file-do-your-taxes-for-f... The program is now open. I think Elon meant ‘deleted the team’.

Same as happened to Twitter?

It will not be needed if there is no income tax.

>President Trump’s “special government employee,” Elon Musk, announced on Monday that he has dissolved the Internal Revenue Service’s free file program, effectively firing the staff who worked on the popular program.

Amazing how little is correct here. Musk claims he deleted a group (18F) that assisted the IRS (among others) with the creation of the tax filing program. The group is (was) part of GSA.

Alternate headline: "Republicans congress to destroy Free IRS tax filing option."

Congress is the sole check on this crazy power-grab by the President, refusing to act is complicity, and the public deserves to know the causes behind the damage. Musk is culpable but by no means uniquely culpable.
