Not really, sounds close to git's --rebase-merges (formerly --preserve-merges):

Not really, sounds close to git's --rebase-merges (formerly --preserve-merges):
I'm guessing putting "--update-refs" on top of it would give you exactly what you want. I also have a version without it though.
