Gruber clearly doesn't understand what markdown is for.

And I know you are going to say, "But ghushn3, Gruber invented it, he therefore whatever he says it's for is necessarily correct!"

I disagree. Times change, people find their uses for things, an invention escapes its creator and the thing it is for is the thing it is used for.

Sylvester Graham invented the graham cracker to stop people from experiencing any stimulation of any kind. He would be mortified to find out what they've become, and he would absolutely say s'mores are an outrage. The use (and indeed the product itself) evolves as people use it and change it to suit their needs.

Gruber is a Graham -- he had a very important role to play in getting the thing started. But we've moved on, we don't owe the inventor control of the thing. We can (and should) remix it, reconfigure it, adopt it, and make it the most useful tool it can be. If we want to type in markdown rather than use the rich text editor controls, then that use is not wrong, no matter what Gruber says.
