Specifically, how reliable are the most basic, and crucial SMS and calling functions? How's battery life? I had a Pinephone a couple of years ago and receiving phone calls wasn't very reliable.

Tl;dr: calls and texts work fine, battery life is not as good as Android/Apple but usable. Also you can replace the battery on the go.
