[flagged] Border Patrol agents show up outside of Gov. Gavin Newsom's press conference (cbsnews.com)

I’ll comment before this inevitably gets flagged.

Federal agents intimidating a sitting governor is an affront to the United States federal system. Anyone failing to protest this only reveals they have no actual allegiance to federalism and only ever view it as a useful tool to bang on when they are not in power in Washington.

We are in deeply dangerous waters as a country.

True. However, I think it’s important to note that the governor refused to be intimidated and continued mocking Trump on social media. I don’t always agree with Newsom’s politics but I sure like the fact that he reuses to bend the knee to Trump.

I'm much more willing to grant Newsom leeway, these days.

I think his logic is sound, for the redistricting response in California that he's threatening, for example.

Unity is a force multiplayer, too, so I'll grant my support until we get through this authoritarian flu.

Every one of the democrats needs to be doing what Newsom is doing. He seems to be the only one with any balls.

I get your point but I hope you realize Newsom is not doing this alone.

That said, it would be pretty fucking cool if all the other democratic states started to actually do something while all of us in California deal with our communities being threatened and attacked and kidnapped.

Border Patrol agents show up, in full combat gear, outside a press conference about redistricting? Seriously? That's not Border Patrol, that's brownshirts.

Look, I'm probably more conservative than a lot of people here. I claim that the federal government has the legitimate authority to remove everyone without the legal right to be in the country.

They don't have the legitimate authority to be brownshirts, thought. The only words I can think of for that are inappropriate for this site.

Watching here from outside the US this is really what it looks like. The very same tactics of pressure and terror used by the brownshirts.

With the difference that they were a paramilitary/militia kind of group and here they are part of the government (probably they have the same cult mentality, but they are using public funding and government power to do those things

And observe how they are being more agressive little by little to see if someone will react. I'm here waiting to see if someone will.

The pettiness of all of this is so stupid. This is tax dollars being incinerated.

We are fortunate it's petty. Be thankful it's not overly violent.

Be unified in your support of peaceful disagreement.

It’s only a matter of time, maybe even weeks away, before this pops off with actual armed resistance. History has shown there is no peaceful disagreement with fascism, and you would have to be naive to listen to folk like Hegseth today and think otherwise.

They are going after immigrants without concealed carry licenses now, but it won’t be long before a leftist decides it’s past time to exercise their 2A rights.

It's already one false move away. If a kid had popped a balloon at Newsom's rally, that might have been enough to start the shooting.

Or maybe not. I'm not sure that the Border Patrol really want to be in a real live firefight. Maybe they're bullies, and want to look tough, but maybe they aren't actually tough.

I guarantee that there are many people who have joined up with ICE in the past few months for the sole purpose of committing violence.

If you have ever done any research that covers “boogaloo boys” or any of those types of groups, you’d know that this is the exact moment in history that they have been waiting for. All the requirements have been checked for them to go off with impunity.

In fact, this push by Newsom to preemptively ratfuck blue districts before Texas does, really pushed the needle that much closer to the red/blue civil war these groups have been going for for decades

In fairness, Texas started it before Newsom...

And in fact, politically, it's already total war. When they're talking about redistricting now, openly saying that it's to pick up seats for Trump, that's open political warfare.

It's total war on the information front, too. Killing the labor statistics is one sign of that, but there are others.

It's total war on the legal front. When Trump is threatening to remove judges who rule against him, when the budget denies funding for courts that do a particular part of their job, that's a war without restraint on the legal front.

The only area on which it is not already open warfare is the physical front. If nothing changes, though, it's coming.

Perfect time to flag every single slightly political thread in the name of "keeping hn clean of politics"

Plase don't post unsubstantive comments to Hacker News. This has nothing to do with anything specific or interesting about the actual OP. That makes it bad for this site.

(Disclaimer: I'm not a moderator, but it's what we're going to get from them anyway)

I wish I had said all this.

A comment I made earlier in this conversation has been downvoted a few times. People are choosing sides and using their votes in attempt to silence voices that question the Trump regime. Fortunately, I have plenty of karma to burn.

How do we know for sure? Did they have badges uncovered for once?

How do we know?

There’s video…everywhere.

…and if you are not familiar with where the press conference was held (Japanese American National Museum) - it’s the “Japan Town” of LA. Incredibly amazing Japanese community with amazing food, shopping, and art.

To send in federal agents to that area is nothing more than intimidation. This area is so calm and quiet, pissed off for my neighbors.

I’ll leave with this though. Little Tokyo in LA is what I credit as being the birth of the LA punk scene. Little Tokyo business owners embraced the counter culture youth and gave them a safe space to perform and hang out.

You cannot intimidate punks. Punks hate nothing more than bullies.
