From the HN guidelines:

> Please don't use uppercase for emphasis. If you want to emphasize a word or phrase, put asterisks around it and it will get italicized.

There's a reason they're called "guidelines" and not "hard rules".

I thought the reminder from GP was fair and I'm disappointed that it's downvoted as of this writing. One thing I've always appreciated about this community is that we can remind each other of the guidelines.

Yes it was just one word, and probably an accident—an accident I've made myself, and felt bad about afterwards—but the guideline is specific about "word or phrase", meaning single words are included. If GGP's single word doesn't apply, what does?

THIS, FOR EXAMPLE. IT IS MUCH MORE REPRESENTATIVE OF HOW ANNOYING IT IS TO READ THAN A SINGLE CAPITALIZATION OF that.

But again, if that is what the guideline is referring to, why does it say "If you want to emphasize a _word or phrase_". By my reading, it is quite explicitly including single words!

I’m saying that being pedantic on HN is a worse sin than capitalizing a single word. Being technically correct isn’t really relevant to how annoying people think you are being.

I come here for the rampant pedantry. It's the legalism no one wants.

Imagine I capitalised a whole selection of specific words in this sentence for emphasis, how annoying that would be to read. I'll spare you. That is what the guideline is about, not one single instance.

Which exact part of the guideline makes you think so?

I’m not the GP, but the reason I capitalize words instead of italicizing them is because the italics don’t look italic enough to convey emphasis. I get the feeling that that may be because HN wants to downplay emphasis in general, which if true is a bad goal that I oppose.

Also, those guidelines were written in the 2000s in a much different context and haven’t really evolved with the times. They seem out of date today, many of us just don’t consider them that relevant.

> All bookings in popular places or on popular dates are NON REFUNDABLE.

I'll be sure to let the places I booked in popular places (Nice, Paris, London and just recently Times Square) that had refundable rooms they should be not offering those rooms. After I refund my booking for Times Square, that is.

In some ways the rest of the world's McDonald's are simply plummeting to the low quality of those in the US.

Here in Greece, we have so much good quality street food that McDonald's is street trash by comparison. I don't consider it food, there are only about eight or nine restaurants in the entire country and I think most people go there because of the novelty.

Please don't let Greece get too wealthy, the quality street food will get pushed out and replaced with overpriced yuppie food that all gets sourced from the exact same company!

Austria resident checking in - since I moved here I noticed the quality of McD’s is way, way better than in the UK. And apart from the regular menu being a whole different experience, you’ve got great quality coffee and cakes. It’s a whole world of difference.

Here in Sweden they changed their recipes a few years ago. I can’t stand the Big Mac now. Previously it at least felt kind of fresh although low quality. Now it has a weird freeze dried sensation to the vegetables :/

As of ~1 year ago, American-fast-food-in-France was still noticeably better than -in-America.

One could say this is where the free market of schooling comes into play. Does it make more economic sense for businesses to choose those with social skills learnt from home schooling, or ones who have not been home schooled? Definitely curious to see where this goes.

If only it was actually a free market. Republicans are actively kneecapping public education so they can pump money to the schools that are free to to discriminate and kick out underperforming kids

The problem is that Cybertruck drivers are likely to have a boisterous driving style which may skew the results - what other kind of personality would purchase a vehicle that is less practical than other trucks, less practical than other EVs and, whether we like it or not, carries a signal to other people on the road.

> The problem is that Cybertruck drivers are likely to have a boisterous driving style

What leads you to believe that?

I'm not 100% sure - there's quite a few YC founders who have been on the Forbes 30 under 30. As we're commenting on one of their sites, I feel obligated to point out how great it is as an accelerator as well!

Not entirely sure comparing an administrative error to burning someone's house down (how do you even know they live in a house?) and killing their family lines up with the HN guidelines.

Making the same administrator error 17,000 times is not an accident.

Administrative error is when it happens once. Not 17e3 times!

I don't think everyone has, which is concerning. I suspect we'll see some congresspeople remark on how they "never voted for" some aspects of the bill.

Ignorance is not a defense for breaking a law and I do hold my politicians (and hope other voters also hold their politicians) to a similar standard when it comes to passing a bill. Lawmakers exist because we've all got food to put on the table and can't handle the constant effort required to understand the intricacies and implications of legal code maintenance - it's the job they've been hired to do and if they're not doing it they shouldn't have that job anymore.

I'm of the opinion that should be unregulated as well. Just like you say, what's important is people's awareness and understanding of the tool and how it works underneath.

Agreed. Some forget that the US has this beautiful great thing called freedom of speech, meaning that some can express to like things, as well as dislike things! It's not uncommon to find stickers among laptops where some are excited for environmental safety and conservationism, and some are for Tesla / Palantir and the values and ethos that they want to perpetuate across the globe.
