The city planners here in Auburn should probably watch this.

They have a horrible habit of performing this kind of work during the worst possible times.

All of the college students will be gone for the summer and things will be nice and quiet. Then the students return and football season begins. Town becomes a mess. Then the City of Auburn start resurfacing roads or adding medians or additional lanes.

It's happened every year for the past 14 years that I've been a resident. It never fails. They always wait until school starts back before they begin any repairs.

I have yet to find an AI tool or combination of AI tools that can hold my hand and give me correct solutions for my coding problems.

I have worked exclusively with React/Next, Node, and Mongo for years until I took over a legacy code base in October.

I had to teach myself Python/Flask, Vue, and Laravel without any kind of documentation or guidance from the previous developers or anyone else in my company.

AI has been able to help me get a bit further down the road each time I run into an issue. But AI hasn't been able to hand me perfect solutions for any of my problems. It helps me better understand the existing code base, but thus far none of the answer provided have been 100% accurate.

I've been actively seeking a new role and trying to jump ship for about four months now. It's definitely been a lot more difficult than I imagined.

There isn't a large tech industry in my area so it's difficult to network or leverage my local connections. I was fortunate to land my current role simply because the CEO found me on LinkedIn and offered me the position. However, I now realize now that he likely had no one apply for this position at all given the pay and benefits.

But I'm still glad I found this role as it is my first official software development job after years of freelancing. I'm hoping to use this role to help me transition into a better compensated job with a more legit company.

It's hard to imagine a place that has more disinformation than Fox News. I'm sure they exist somewhere, but Fox News really takes the cake when it comes to straight up lying and disinformation.

I watch both Fox News and CNN from time to time and I see about as much from one as the other.

CNN is honestly just as bad as Fox and the only reason they get away with it is a significant portion of the media also has a heavy left bias so it's less noticeable.

The world is always ending, $CURRENT_THING is the most important thing ever, of the week.

I have a family member obsessed with CNN, has it streamed on multiple televisions around the house at all times. Its quite funny watching his viewpoints flip-flop depending on the current news cycle and what CNN is focusing on at any given time.

Pretty soon here he's probably gonna hassle me about getting another booster, (nameless) experts say they're so safe and effective after all.

I'm a 42 year old male and I had a colonoscopies perform in March. My GP was immediately concerned with my symptoms and referred me to a gastro doctor. The gastro doc shrugged everything off and didn't think I need a colonoscopy. So I went home and order two of the occult blood test. I used one test on Monday and the second on the following Friday. Both came back positive.

So I called the gastro again and he finally scheduled me for the procedure. After the procedure he said everything was fine and he has no idea why the at home tests were positive. I don't know what to think now.

Lots of companies/industries pray on hypochondriacs, the "vitamin" industry for example. I wouldn't be surprise if they sell shady tests (high false positives/negatives) at a premium for people who "want to be sure". I've seen the same for STDs

I recently learned from a friend in the industry, that when companies run "clinical" trials for their products, they almost never use a control in the study. It's pretty much just "Use this product that is specially formulated to do this, and report back if it made a change".

It's really getting out of hand. I see it here with my coworkers in our small company. There are only 6 employees here total. 3 of my coworkers commute for 1hr+ away each way because they can't afford to live in our town. And then they don't eat. With their work schedule and their commute they're gone from home for 12hrs or more per day so they can't meal prep. And they can't afford to dine out. So they simply don't eat breakfast or lunch.

I told my CEO that my past success and my wife are effectively subsidizing his company. Because I could not afford to work here it I had not been so successful earlier and if my wife didn't have a great job with great benefits. In fact, I'm seriously considering leaving my role when the summer starts because childcare for my 5 year old son is going to cost ~55% of my net pay each month.

But my CEO and his family of 4 have been to Disney World twice since October 2023. And they're going to Europe for 2 weeks this summer.

I feel like the owner/operator of a six-person company styling themselves the "CEO" is symbolic of something, somehow.

Definitely. And his wife is the "Executive Assistant" although I've only seen her in the office 4-5 times since I started in October.

A 2 week vacation and 2 long weekends to Disney World don't seem out of reach for any middle class family, let alone a company owner. My sister is an adjunct professor and I think has been to disneyland 3 times this year already.

The rest of it certainly sucks though. There would have to be a VERY good motivation for me to travel that far for work. Most of us on here are involved in software and I'd be shocked to see if less than half of us were remote or partly remote.

> A 2 week vacation and 2 long weekends to Disney World don't seem out of reach for any middle class family, let alone a company owner.

The fact that this person is going on all these vacations while his workers forgo meals is just kind of fucked up. The fact that people don't seem to see a problem with this is the problem.

Yes but it shouldn't take 5 people working 50+ hours per week to support just one family. The CEO's family is the only one taking vacations. They're the only family that has healthcare.

"Keep up all your hard work and next year I'll take you for a drive in my new sports car!" —Some Boss, probably

I know you're kidding, but one of my neighbors gets super excited because his boss allows him to job his sports car to lunch sometimes. My neighbor can't afford his own sports car but at least he gets to drive one to McDonald's a few times per month.

One of the worst paying jobs I ever had had the "perk" of occassionally driving ~$100k sports cars home, about once per month.

I absolutely beat the shit out of those perks.

"No one feels like they 'have to' come in on Saturdays" yet that's literally in the job description.

"Plus we do take Sundays off."

Wow. That's very generous.

So many of the hippies I know turned into extreme bigots and right wing crackpots later in life.

I had a former employer who always bragged about being at Woodstock and all the drugs he did and the protesting and such. He'd talk about all the friends he lost due to the Vietnam war. He's 81 years old now and he still habitually smokes marijuana. But now he's mean. He regurgitates Fox News talking points all the time while complaining about Mexicans and other minorities.

I often wondered why people pivoted like that. My late FIL said it was because they were insecure and afraid.

I believe your late FIL is correct. It is fear that drives the pivot.

Perhaps that can be resolved by getting the children started in sports while they are very young?

But you may be right because I have experienced this while watching the other kids in my son's sports classes.

My son started going to a gym called "Kidstrong" when he was 3.5 years old. It was basically a bunch of kids following instructions and performing basic calisthenic exercises and beginner gymnastics moves.

However, we had to stop going because there was a kid in the class who simply couldn't get his act together. Maybe he was special needs or maybe that's just the way he was allowed to behave at home. But the coaches spent so much time trying to get that one kid to follow basic instructions that it ended up detracting from the time that my child and the other kids got with the coaches. It came to the point where my wife and I (along with a number of other parents) realized that we were paying $25 per 45 minute session for our children to sit and watch the coaches spend 20 minutes trying to corral this one kid who couldn't behave.

So we put my son into BJJ instead. And we're experiencing something very similar. There are two other kids in his class that simply can't follow instructions or chose not too. Fortunately this is a locally owned gym so we spoke to the owner about our concerns and he spoke to the kids' parents. The kids have been behaving better lately, but they still serve as a huge distraction.

The risk isn’t anxious kids with involved parents that can gently push them into activity. It’s kids with not enough food at home and no one at home to give a shit bout them.

It's wild that the "Greatest Country in the World" still hasn't managed to figure out this whole healthcare thing.

Except it has, just as a business that uses you as raw material for its money printer.
