Tired of swiping? Me and my best friend Kate (recent Brown grads living in NYC) built Left Field to help people meet more effortlessly. We do the looking for you: when you cross paths with someone especially compatible, we’ll send you a push notification nudging you to check out their profile. You also get a daily stack of people from your current neighborhood. Curious what HN thinks about building dating apps around proximity and context vs. infinite swiping.

I like the idea but kinda worried it could be stalkerware.

I definitely see how swiping can be depressing, but when you cross paths with somebody IRL and things go south you might be in a situation where you might not want to ride the bus because you want to avoid that person.

Like many things like that there is also a density issue. It is one thing to promote it in a dense and tech-heavy area like the bay, in the rest of the country getting above critical mass could be harder.

Agree that other location-based apps (like Happn) have run into that problem with being overly specific in how they share location data. That's why on our app you can only see vague info limited to "they're also in the West Village." It doesn't update in real time or have their exact location.

We’re starting in denser areas (early access in NYC, a few colleges). When we expand, we’ll adjust neighborhood sizes to account for density :)
